Robert Kirkman, the visionary behind The Walking Dead, has voiced his unapologetic support for the complex character, Negan, through a candid—and quite explicit—message directed at both fans and even one cast member. This passionate declaration not only underscores Kirkman’s deep connection to his characters but also offers a glimpse into the creative process that writers often strive to achieve.
It’s no secret that Negan elicits mixed reactions from fans. Kirkman recognizes that while many are enthralled by the villain’s charm and depth, others harbor a strong dislike for him.
The recent release of The Walking Dead Deluxe #103, illustrated by Kirkman alongside talents like Charlie Adlard, Dave McCaig, and Rus Wooton, takes a significant narrative turn. This particular issue highlights **Negan’s ascendance** as he usurps Rick Grimes’ leadership position, profoundly altering the dynamics within the group.
In addition to this pivotal plot development, the deluxe edition features discussions from Kirkman himself, addressing fan inquiries about the lore of The Walking Dead. Amongst his passionate commentary is a remarkable statement where he bluntly tells discontented fans to, “…f***ing f*** the f*** off.”

During conversations regarding Negan’s character, Kirkman expressed how this antagonist quickly became a personal favorite. He described Negan’s voice as compelling, often allowing him to write effortlessly. “…I’d get to a scene with Negan and I’d just…rattle off horrific dialogue rapid fire and it would just EAT pages,” he recounted. This state of creative flow is something many writers aspire to achieve, and Kirkman’s experience with Negan appears to facilitate that process.
Kirkman elaborated further, stating, “[Writing Negan] made issues feel 12 pages long to me sometimes. Oh, Negan talks here….OOPS that’s 8 pages… almost half the issue is DONE.” This enthusiastic reflection not only showcases the exhilaration Kirkman feels while penning Negan’s lines but also reveals why, despite Negan’s heinous acts, he remains a cherished character for the creator. Yet, he is mindful of differing opinions, humorously concluding with, “I know some people hate Negan. Those people can f***ing f*** the f*** off. (Sorry, Steven).”
A Light-hearted Apology to Steven Yeun

Kirkman’s assertive remarks towards Negan’s critics, while humorous, also come with a playful nod towards actor Steven Yeun. Yeun portrayed Glenn Rhee, a beloved character who meets a tragically brutal end at the hands of Negan wielding his notorious bat, Lucille. It’s understandable why Yeun might not share Kirkman’s enthusiasm for Negan’s character, making the apology all the more amusing.
