The conclusion of Love Island season 11 took place on July 29, 2024, marking a historic win for Mimii Ngulube and Josh Oyinsan, who became the first Black couple to take home the title of this popular dating show. However, their relationship was unable to withstand the pressures of the outside world. On September 30, 2024, Mimii announced via her official Instagram account that she and Josh had broken up, attributing their separation to difficulties connecting beyond the villa.
Fans of the show and supporters of the couple had already noticed a lack of interaction between Josh and Mimii on social media in recent weeks, and reports suggested they had been seen enjoying separate outings. Mimii shared moments from her nights out with fellow islanders Una Jammeh, Nicole Samuel, Jessy Potts, and Patsy Field, while Josh attended events such as the Beetlejuice premiere in London without her.
The undeniable chemistry they displayed within the villa did not translate to the real world, leading to their breakup just two months following the season finale. Josh and Mimii were not the only couple from the show to part ways; in September, Joey Essex and Jessy Potts also announced their split just seven weeks after leaving the villa.
The news of Josh and Mimii’s breakup shocked many Love Island fans, although some observed that their incompatibility had become apparent. Fans took to X to share their reactions.
“Mimii and Josh broke up but icl I saw it coming,”a fan wrote.
“Loooooool Mimii and Josh broke up, it was so obvious that Josh was over Mimii since the terrace thing and that Mimii was never into Josh that much (she likes boring people like Ayo) but y’all were calling us haters and colourist,”another fan commented.
“At least Mimi and Josh’s announcement outlived Joey and Jessy’s,”a netizen tweeted.
Many Love Island fans were left disappointed by the couple’s split.
“We got scammed AGAIN. Did Mimii and Josh even tryyyyyyy????? Damn,”a user reacted.
“They better not broke up the only ship invested in Mimi and Josh don’t do this to us plz now y’all don’t do this to me,”a person commented.
“Nooo Mimii & Josh are over,”another fan wrote.
Conversely, numerous Love Island fans were not surprised by this development, stating that the couple’s lack of chemistry had been evident from the beginning. Nonetheless, fans urged others to treat their breakup with respect.
“Mimi and Josh breaking up not fazing me cuz I understand that on a show like Love Island, men are accessories not contestants continue to thrive queen,”a user tweeted.
“Well..Josh was ALWAYS too friendly w/ Mimii’s ops to begin with. In the Villa, he was laughing WITH Ayo AT Mimii and being extra chummy w Jess. Post Villa: he’s dancing w Ayo @ events; belly laughing w Ayo & Dami while highlighting Mimii’s absence; Bermuda reel was intentional,”another person reacted.
“But why can’t be cordial though? It’s fine for people to break up,”one netizen commented.
Love Island star Mimii expresses gratitude to fans for their support in her Instagram announcement
Mimii officially announced her breakup with Josh via her Instagram Stories on September 30, 2024. In her statement, she highlighted their incompatibility outside the villa as a critical factor in their decision to part ways.
“Hi, everyone, I know that a lot of you have been wondering about Josh and I and why we haven’t been making appearances. The truth is we have been trying to figure it out since leaving the villa, but unfortunately, things aren’t going to work out between us right now,”Mimii wrote.
She acknowledged that her announcement might be “a big disappointment”for many fans while expressing her gratitude for their unwavering support of her and Josh since the conclusion of Love Island. Mimii stated she would “forever be grateful for it,”recognizing the fans’ role in their victory on the show.
Josh and Mimii won the 11th season of Love Island with an impressive 41% of the public vote. Host Maya Jama was one of the many who cheered for the couple. They even had plans to split their time between their respective cities, with Josh based in London and Mimii in Portsmouth. However, those plans did not materialize, resulting in the couple’s decision to go their separate ways.
Love Island airs on ITV2 and is available for streaming on ITVX.
