In a recent interview with Earn Your Leisure, 50 Cent opened up about his reasons for stepping back from rapping, as highlighted in Billboard’s feature on October 2. The renowned American rapper, producer, and television executive shared his thoughts on the current state of rap music, noting that it’s being “dumbed down,”which diminishes his enthusiasm for producing new tracks. He stated:
“If you listen to the music that’s out right now, I have to tap into my stupid. I have to tap into the stupid side of me to write the right thing when it comes time to write the music.”
Since the release of his debut album, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, in 2003, 50 Cent has established a formidable presence in the rap industry. His career skyrocketed with successive albums, including The Massacre in 2005 and Curtis in 2007.
However, it has been nearly a decade since his last album, Animal Ambition, which launched in 2014. Since then, he has explored various projects beyond music. Despite this hiatus, his compilation album remains a fixture on the UK albums chart, according to Forbes.
In January 2023, during his guest appearance on Big Boy TV, 50 Cent mentioned collaborating on new music with Dr. Dre. He further teased fans with a February 19 Instagram post, where he hinted at “some New Heat coming”to celebrate Dr. Dre’s birthday.
50 Cent Discusses His Broader Impact Beyond Music
Within the same interview with Earn Your Leisure, as reported by Billboard, 50 Cent elaborated on why he prefers pursuing opportunities outside the realm of music. He remarked on his hesitance to create as much content as he previously did:
“That is why I haven’t created as much content as I was creating in the past and I started going towards the film production and development of these projects. Because I can impact things in a bigger way through that.”
Taking inspiration from Tyler Perry, whom he noted exemplifies success in the industry, 50 Cent founded G-Unit Films and Television in 2003. Since then, he has executive-produced a variety of television projects, including Power Confidential, BMF, and Power Book.
In addition to his production endeavors, 50 Cent has made appearances in a range of shows and films such as Den of Thieves, Escape Plan 2, Escape Plan: The Extractors, Power, and Boneyard.
Moreover, in February 2023, 50 Cent secured a multi-project deal with Fox, which includes a documentary addressing the allegations against Diddy titled Diddy Do It. Netflix won the rights for its distribution, and production is reportedly underway, with Alexandria Stapleton as the director.
The documentary aims to explore the sexual and physical abuse allegations against Diddy, including the recent federal charges he faces, though details about the release date and the documentary’s structure remain undisclosed.
