“I always wanted to do music for real”- Baby Storme reflects on her artistic journey
In an interview with Paper magazine in October 2023, Baby Storme discussed her emergence as a musician and shared her musical influences. When asked if she had always dreamed of a music career, she responded:
“I was raised singing in the choir. At three, I taught myself to play piano, always dreaming of a real career in music, even if I once deemed it unattainable. As I grew older and found college not to my liking, I decided to pursue my dreams full force. I began as an independent artist then, and I continue on that path today.”
She also elaborated on the origin of her stage name, revealing that it stemmed from her distinctive look involving silver hair and braids. She shared:
“Years ago, when I first ventured into music, I consistently sported silver hair and braids. This became my signature style. Eventually, people began to compare me to the superhero Storm, so I simply added ‘baby’ at the start. It’s not a dramatic story, but that’s how it came to be.”
Baby Storme categorizes her music as “alt-pop,”drawing inspiration from the alternative sounds of ’80s grunge. She noted that while many of her tracks are commercial, some lean heavily on piano, asserting that “alternative pop”is a fitting label for her style.
In the same interview, Baby Storme mentioned pop icons such as Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Madonna, and Britney Spears as her early inspirations. Additionally, she confessed to enjoying a diverse array of music genres, spanning from pop and alternative to classical and rap, although she never pinpointed a single major influence.
