“I know it’s going to be hard on her if I pass away before her. Because it’s going to be so hard on her, I want other things to be a lot easier. I don’t want her to have a bunch of stuff to deal with. I don’t want her to have four storage units filled with furniture,” Shannen Doherty explained.
In her solo episode, the Beverly Hills, 90210 star also discussed her choice to release her material possessions and prioritize quality time with loved ones and creating meaningful memories with her mother.
Analyzing Shannen Doherty’s Latest Podcast Episode
On Monday, April 1st, Shannen Doherty opened up on her Let’s Be Clear podcast. In an episode titled Let’s Be Raw… with Shannen Doherty, which lasted 35 minutes, the actress revealed that she was in the process of decluttering her homes, storage units, and other properties as a precautionary measure in light of her ongoing battle with cancer.
She explained that her current focus was on her mother, stating that if her mother passed away before her at the age of 76, it would be emotionally challenging for her. This was the reason she was taking steps to make things easier for her, such as donating or selling her belongings in advance.
“So, we were in Tennessee and I was packing up one of the places there. It was really hard and really emotional because to a certain extent — I felt like I was giving up on this dream of building this property out, and putting a house for me and a house for my mom and then extending the barn,” she stated.
Shannen Doherty added:
“I was packing up and I started crying… I felt like I was giving up on a dream and what did that mean for me? Did it mean that I was giving up on life? Did it mean that I was throwing in the towel? And my mom was there and she was like, ‘Don’t get rid of this place, it’s fine. You don’t have to and you can keep going.’ I said, ‘Yeah, absolutely I can.’”
She expressed her desire to live on the Tennessee property with her mother and create a sanctuary for horses who have been neglected by their owners due to old age or injuries, stating that it had always been one of her dreams.
The 52-year-old explained that although it was difficult, she made the decision to let go of her dream because she believed it was the right thing to do and would ultimately bring her peace. She came to this realization after recognizing the high cost and impracticality of renovating the property, which she described as “stupid.”However, she remains determined to fulfill her passion for helping and fostering horses by participating in rescues closer to her home in California, where she feels she is better equipped to make a difference.
Shannen Doherty clarified that decluttering her residences and belongings was also a way for her to provide a smoother and simpler transition for her mother and the rest of her family, while also recognizing that these possessions did not bring her as much happiness as creating cherished moments with her loved ones did.
“It allows me to take more trips because I’m making money, I’m selling it. Then I get to build different memories and I build memories with the people that I love,” she added.
As she struggled to speak, she also brought up,
“I get to take my mom on vacations because I have all this extra play money lying around and I’m not digging into the money that’s in my estate that’s going to make sure that everybody in my life is taken care of once I’m dead… This isn’t about giving up, it’s about giving it all.”
Despite her cancer diagnosis in 2015, Shannen Doherty has always been open and honest about her journey. After successfully battling early-stage breast cancer, she went into remission two years later.
Despite a brief period of remission in 2018, the cancer returned to stage 4 in 2019. The Heathers actress shared last year that the cancer had metastasized to her brain and bones, and she was determined to continue her fight for survival.
