“I had to find little ways to enhance my features” – Serena Williams recounts creative use of makeup accessories amid tennis challenges

With the launch of her own company, WYN Beauty, American tennis legend Serena Williams has made her official entry into the beauty industry.

Throughout her 27-year-long career, Williams has consistently captured the attention of the fashion world every time she stepped onto the court. From her bold and vibrant jean skirts to her iconic catsuit, the former World No. 1 has always stood out with her stylish and designer outfits. It comes as no surprise that she has now expanded into the beauty industry with her own brand, WYN Beauty.

Byrdie, an American beauty and fashion publication, recently published an interview with Serena Williams where she discussed her fashion journey and the motivation behind starting WYN Beauty.

The 42-year-old reflected on her fashion choices during her time as a tennis player and shared how dressing her best made her feel empowered. Williams explained that tennis players have a unique approach to wearing makeup compared to other athletes and discussed the small changes she made to her beauty routine.

“Showing up [like that] was great for me. Tennis is different than other sports. Sprinters and gymnasts, for example, can wear a full face of makeup. With tennis, you can play for three hours and have sweat pouring down your face. So I had to find little ways to enhance my features. It started with the beads—that was a way to express myself. From there, I leaned into eyeliner and lipstick,”Williams said.

The packaging of all products is designed in a bright green color, drawing inspiration from the vibrant hue of yellow-green tennis balls.

Nike has recently paid tribute to Serena Williams’ on-court fashion over the years by releasing the newest installment of the ‘Serena Williams Design Crew’ collection. The Design Crew was established in 2021 to pave the way for the future of fashion, guided by Williams and a team of talented and up-and-coming fashion designers.

At the age of 21, the 23-time Grand Slam champion entered into a lucrative partnership with Nike and wore a Nike ensemble at her debut in the 2004 US Open. Throughout her career, she has elevated the style of the tennis court with her fashion choices and the most recent SWDC collection celebrates these iconic looks.

Williams discussed her motivation to be unique on the tennis court and explore creativity in her fashion choices during the launch of her collection. Additionally, she emphasized the importance of inclusivity in fashion to cater to individuals of all backgrounds and identities.

“When I step on the court, I definitely want to stand out. I’m Serena and I like to be different. I just like taking a chance when it comes to design. The world isn’t one color. We come from different backgrounds and think differently. When you bring all that diversity together, can you begin to imagine the amazing things that you are able to make?” Williams said.
