“I can do more combinations” – Regian Eersel pumped for kickboxing return after plying his trade in Muay Thai
The reigning ONE lightweight world champion in two sports, Regian Eersel, is set to defend his kickboxing title against Alexis Nicolas in the main event of ONE Fight Night 21 on April 5th. The highly anticipated match will take place at the renowned Lumpinee Boxing Stadium.
Regarded as one of the top strikers in the current global landscape, ‘The Immortal’ boasts an impressive record of 22 consecutive victories. Notably, ten of these wins were achieved in ONE Championship, with an impressive eight of them being world title bouts.
Despite having won and defended his division’s world title in his last three Muay Thai fights, the Surinamese-Dutch striker is looking forward to a return to kickboxing.
He informed ONE Championship:
“Yeah, not a lot of adaptations, but a few. I can fight now from the closed guard because of the big gloves, and I can do more combinations. I’m going to do more combinations because, in my opinion, with small gloves, if you do a long combination and your opponent counters it, then you’re gonna get punched. So these are like a few things that I need to adjust in my training.”
Not only does kickboxing prohibit elbow strikes and kick-catching, but it also permits the use of larger gloves for improved blocking. This is particularly beneficial for a fighter like Regian Eersel, who excels in long-range fighting and is known for his powerful kicks.
Veteran Regian Eersel credits experience in preparation for Alexis Nicolas matchup
In addition to the kickboxing rules that are better suited to his fighting style, Regian Eersel attributes his experience as a veteran fighter as the key factor in his successful defense of the world title against Nicolas.
He informed one person:
“My bigges advantage I think is my experience, my pressure going forward, and my aggression. I think he will struggle with that.”
At ONE Fight Night 21, airing live on US Primetime for existing Prime Video subscribers in North America, watch as Eersel uses his veteran aggression and pressure to overpower the relatively inexperienced Alexis Nicolas, who will be facing a tough challenge. Best of all, this event is completely free of charge.
