Getting Started in Hytale: A Beginner’s Guide
Hytale offers a vast world filled with endless possibilities, which can be a bit daunting for newcomers. When you first dive into the game, you begin with an empty inventory and no specific objectives in Exploration mode. If this feels overwhelming, rest assured that you’re not alone. This guide aims to provide you with essential initial steps and a clear progression plan for character development and gear advancement.
As of now, Hytale is still in early access, meaning some content and features may be incomplete. However, the following outline highlights key actions that will significantly enhance your gaming experience. Expect more elaborate content and progression options to emerge with upcoming updates and expansions.
Hytale Progression Plan Overview
Quick Overview

- Craft basic tools
- Establish a shelter
- Create equipment using various ores:
- Copper
- Iron
- Thorium
- Cobalt
- Adamantite
- Explore the Forgotten Temple
- Upgrade your base and gear
- Learn about Ancient Gateway Maps
If you’re brand new to Hytale, **this list outlines the fundamental pathway for progression**.Although players are free to explore as they wish, using this framework can create a more structured experience.
Keep in mind, exploration is vital. Progression halts if you remain stationary without gathering resources, crafting equipment, or expanding your adventure.
Crafting Essential Tools

Your primary goal should be to craft a set of simple tools and weapons. Instead of pushing your way through trees and rocks, focus on collecting Sticks and Rubble. These items can be fashioned into basic equipment, suitable for resource gathering and self-defense.
Sticks can be found in grass or by breaking slender trees, while Rubble lies atop rocks or along the ground. Once you’ve gathered enough materials, press the Tab key to access your inventory and the Crafting Menu, where you can create your initial tools. Afterward, resume collecting resources to prepare for your future shelter.
Constructing Your First Shelter

When constructing your first shelter, it doesn’t need to be extravagant, but you should ensure there’s ample room for:
- A bed or bedroll
- Up to 12 crafting stations
- 5-6 large storage chests
- A small farm
Since you’ll gather an abundance of resources, various crafting stations are necessary for processing them. Always remember, materials that you cannot use immediately may have other potential uses later, so avoid discarding anything for now.
Optimal Locations for Your Base
The maps in Hytale’s Exploration mode are procedurally generated, providing unique experiences for each player. If given the choice, **select a building site close to water and in an autumn-themed forest** for ideal resource accessibility. Water is crucial for obtaining Salt Blocks, while the autumn forest provides important mushrooms and wood types for crafting.
Understanding Gear Progression

Hytale features a mostly vertical gear progression system, where tools, weapons, and armor are tiered by material. Here’s a brief overview of the current equipment tiers from lowest to highest:
- Copper Tier
- Iron Tier
- Thorium Tier
- Cobalt Tier
- Adamantite Tier
In Creative Mode, players will find opportunities for horizontal progression within gear tiers. For instance, players can choose between standard Iron Armor and the Trork Warrior set, which offers different mechanics despite having equivalent defensive values.
Notably, you don’t necessarily have to craft every tier to advance. If you are savvy in your exploration, you might leapfrog straight to Cobalt, but bear in mind that this might be challenging with underwhelming gear.
Exploring the Forgotten Temple

One intriguing location to discover at any point is the Forgotten Temple. Players can access it through portals hidden under ruined temples throughout the game’s world. Locate a ruin, venture to the basement, and proceed through the portal.
Currently under active development, the Forgotten Temple isn’t fully realized. Nevertheless, it offers players some unique experiences, such as:
- Interacting with the altar to observe and document Memories
- Engaging with NPC vendors to acquire crafting materials, recipes, and more
Enhancing Your Base and Gear

Upgrading your workbenches is a central element of progression in Hytale. Higher-level workbenches unlock new crafting possibilities, so gather resources diligently. Interact with workbenches to discern their upgrade requirements and ensure you collect what’s necessary before embarking on your adventures.
A farm at your base is essential for growing food and harvesting Essences of Life. While exploring, keep an eye out for equipment or random weapons dropped by monsters—some may surpass your current gear. For instance, Outlanders in tundra areas can drop Doomed Outlander weapons, offering enticing upgrades (pending full implementation).
Constructing the Ancient Gateway

Once you’ve completed the earlier tasks, consider constructing an Ancient Gateway. This device lets you use Fragments to generate portals leading to new, uniquely themed maps. Each map offers distinct environments, encouraging exploration. Activate a Fragment, step through the portal, and enjoy the adventure until your time runs out.
Bear in mind that this feature is still a work in progress, so its full potential isn’t available just yet.
