Hyerim from Wonder Girls Exposes Online Scam Involving Children’s Books

Hyerim Exposes Online Scamming Experience

Hyerim, the former member of the renowned K-pop group Wonder Girls, recently shared her unsettling experience with online fraud while trying to buy children’s books. The 32-year-old singer, who is also a mother of two, took to social media to inform her followers about the increasing risks of internet scams.

Details of the Scam

In her detailed Instagram post, Hyerim identified various red flags she encountered during the transaction. One alarming sign was the seller’s request to communicate solely via KakaoTalk, a popular messaging app. Additionally, she received external payment links and was pressured to send a nominal fee of 1, 000 KRW (approximately $0.75 USD) under dubious claims of a failed delivery.

“I can’t believe I got scammed online. I can’t sleep. If you have the energy to scam people, why not use it to work honestly? Don’t live your life like that!”

Reflecting on the emotional toll of the incident, Hyerim expressed her disbelief and disappointment, particularly as a mother. She poignantly remarked, “I got scammed while buying kids’ books. Don’t exploit mothers’ feelings like this.”

Rising Trend of Online Fraud in South Korea

This incident comes at a time when South Korean authorities are issuing warnings about the surge in online scams targeting vulnerable populations, especially students and patients. Experts have pointed out that phishing scams using KakaoTalk are becoming more common, often using urgent messages to catch unsuspecting individuals off guard.

A Glimpse into Hyerim’s Music Career

Hyerim rose to fame when she joined Wonder Girls in 2010, stepping in for Sunmi, who was on a hiatus. During her tenure with the group, Hyerim showcased her multifaceted talents as a lead rapper, vocalist, and guitarist, contributing to songwriting and production for hits like those featured on their 2015 album, REBOOT, and the 2016 single, “Why So Lonely.”

Although Wonder Girls disbanded in 2017 following unsuccessful contract negotiations, Hyerim continued to work with JYP Entertainment until January 2020. She later signed with RRR Entertainment, a company created by former bandmate Yubin, but opted not to renew her contract in February 2023. Most recently, she joined Wave Entertainment in January 2024.

Personal Life

In her personal life, Hyerim married taekwondo athlete Shin Min-chul in a private ceremony in July 2020. The couple has two sons, welcoming their first child in 2022 and their second in December 2023.
