In September 2024, Huawei made headlines by launching the world’s first tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT, marking an impressive comeback in the highly competitive tech landscape of China. While other major players, including Samsung, have years of experience in refining the ‘book style’ foldable smartphones, Huawei chose to adopt a unique strategy. Unwilling to confine its ambitions to the domestic market alone, the company turned its focus to international expansion with the Mate XT, though it comes at a price that may deter many potential buyers.

The global launch price of the Mate XT is set at an eye-watering €3, 499 (around $3, 660), positioning it as one of the most expensive smartphones on the market, nearly double that of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6. Although specific launch countries have yet to be confirmed, there are indications that the device will be available in regions like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, as previously reported by CNBC. Technological Resurgence Amid Challenges

Huawei’s comeback in the Chinese market can be largely attributed to its revitalized chip manufacturing capabilities, beginning with the launch of the Kirin 9000S in 2023. This advancement helped increase the company’s market share from 12% to 17% in 2024. However, the road to a broader global presence remains fraught with challenges, primarily stemming from U. S.trade sanctions that have hindered access to essential Google apps typically pre-installed in their devices. As a result, Huawei has had to pivot towards developing HarmonyOS NEXT, which is slated to power the Mate XT.

Obstacles to Adoption: Consumer Perception and Performance

Despite Huawei’s bold initiatives, several barriers could impede the Mate XT’s success. One major concern is whether consumers will embrace HarmonyOS NEXT, as their long-standing familiarity with iOS and Android may limit their willingness to explore alternative platforms. Additionally, privacy and security apprehensions may lead some regions to be skeptical about adopting a new operating system. Another crucial factor is the performance of the Mate XT itself; it operates on the Kirin 9010, which, despite being an upgrade, utilizes SMIC’s older 7nm process.
