Huawei Launches Advanced Atlas 950 & 960 SuperPoD AI Servers, Promising to Outperform NVIDIA’s Rubin Series

Huawei is positioning itself as a formidable contender in the rack-scale market, delivering its latest advancements in AI clusters that directly challenge NVIDIA’s dominance. The Chinese technology giant recently announced its innovative offerings during the Huawei Connect 2025 event.

Competing Head-On: Huawei’s Atlas 950 SuperPoD versus NVIDIA’s Rubin NVL144 & NVL572

Known for its aggressive stance against NVIDIA in China’s burgeoning AI landscape, Huawei recently introduced its CloudMatrix 384 AI system, which allegedly outperformed NVIDIA’s Blackwell AI system. The company has now unveiled two new models of its ‘SuperPoD’ AI clusters: the Atlas 950 and the Atlas 960. Notably, the Atlas 950 will utilize the newly designed Ascend AI chips, positioning it as a direct competitor to NVIDIA’s Rubin series.

According to Huawei’s specifications, the Atlas 950 SuperPoD will harness a staggering 8, 192 Ascend 950 AI chips, collectively delivering performance metrics of 8 EFLOPS in FP8 and 16 EFLOPS in FP16, along with an astonishing interconnect bandwidth of 16.3 PB/s. These impressive figures suggest that the SuperPoD could rival NVIDIA’s NVL144 Vera Rubin AI rack, indicating Huawei’s intention to challenge NVIDIA’s market share head-on as early as next year.

Expanding on the Atlas 950 capabilities, Huawei intends to integrate these SuperPoD AI clusters into the Atlas 950 SuperCluster. This massive system will comprise an extraordinary 524, 288 Ascend 950 AI chips, making it a potential leader in the realm of AI computing. The company claims this configuration will be the largest AI cluster globally, setting a new benchmark in chip density, as configurations featuring upwards of 500, 000 chips are exceedingly rare.

Huawei also announced the Atlas 950 SuperCluster and Atlas 960 SuperCluster, which can scale up to support between 500, 000 and 1 million processors, making them the “largest AI compute clusters” in the world, the company said.– SCMP

Huawei’s ability to achieve such formidable computational figures can be attributed to its focus on maximizing processing power rather than stringent considerations of performance efficiency or cost. However, the sheer number of AI chips raises concerns about power consumption, which is anticipated to be substantial.

While there are valid concerns regarding the implications of such announcements, it is evident that Huawei is striving to satisfy domestic computing needs. The collective efforts of Chinese AI companies reflect a determined strategy to reduce reliance on Western technology and strengthen their position in the global tech ecosystem.
