
In a significant advancement for China’s semiconductor industry, Huawei is poised to develop an advanced 3nm Gate-All-Around (GAA) technology. This initiative aims to bolster the company’s competitive edge in the global market.
Huawei’s Ambitious Shift Towards High-End Chip Development
Recognized as a powerhouse in innovation, Huawei has made considerable strides in diversifying its product offerings beyond mobile technology. The company is now heavily investing in artificial intelligence and computing, positioning itself as a formidable competitor against Western tech giants. According to a report by Taiwan Economic Daily, Huawei has begun research and development on its 3nm GAA technology, following the success of its Kirin X90 System on Chip (SoC) utilizing a domestic 5nm process developed by SMIC.
Huawei’s strategic choice of GAA architecture for its 3nm node indicates a departure from conventional silicon transistor designs, favoring innovative “two-dimensional”materials. This novel approach could enhance performance while reducing power consumption, setting new standards for efficiency in chip design. Notably, Samsung Foundry is the only other company that has successfully implemented a 3nm GAA design, raising questions about potential collaborations between these industry leaders.

In addition to the advanced node, Huawei is also exploring a “carbon-based”design for its 3nm chips, utilizing carbon nanotubes as a compelling alternative to traditional silicon transistors. This experimentation reflects Huawei’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of chip technology. While current plans remain in the preliminary phases, the company’s track record of ambitious, albeit sometimes abandoned, projects suggests a cautious optimism regarding their potential. Given their achievements in the 5nm domain—particularly their success in integrating these processes into consumer products—it’s reasonable to anticipate further innovations on the horizon.
As Huawei strengthens its position within the semiconductor landscape, the company has effectively verticalized its supply chain, enhancing its capacity to compete with Western technology firms.
