Anticipation builds as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 awaits its official unveiling. Recently, Qualcomm’s CEO Cristiano Amon and Google’s Senior VP of Devices and Services, Rick Osterloh, gave a nostalgic nod to the past by presenting a functioning HTC Dream, the very first Android smartphone. While HTC might not be a contender in the smartphone market today, this iconic device, once a household name, stands as a remarkable reminder of the industry’s evolution.
The Snapdragon Summit Welcomes Back the Iconic HTC Dream
During the keynote, which is available for viewing on YouTube, Amon astonished both Osterloh and the audience alike by bringing the HTC Dream onto the stage at approximately the 42-minute mark. He shared that the collaboration between Android and Google began in 2006, indicating that the journey to the final product took several years. Recognized in the U. S.as the T-Mobile G1, this pioneering smartphone demonstrated its longevity by holding a charge and operating flawlessly, despite its age.
For those unfamiliar with the HTC Dream, it featured a unique QWERTY physical keyboard combined with touch controls via its 3.2-inch capacitive LCD display, boasting a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels. Now, 17 years later, Amon humorously recounted his attempts to upgrade the device to the latest Android version—an endeavor that ultimately proved impossible on stage.
The HTC Dream was powered by a Qualcomm MSM7201A SoC clocking in at 528MHz, along with 192MB of RAM and 256MB of internal storage. Reflecting on today’s Android devices, one can hardly imagine that it all began with this initial release, paving the way for the world’s foremost mobile operating system. This was a delightful moment in tech history, expertly revisited by both Amon and Osterloh during the summit.
