How to Use WhatsApp’s In-App Translation Feature on iPhone

Communicating effectively across different languages can be a challenge, particularly on social media platforms. However, WhatsApp has introduced a new in-app translation feature specifically for iPhone users. This enhancement supports a total of 19 languages and dialects, making conversations easier and more inclusive.

How to Translate Messages on WhatsApp

WhatsApp surpasses Apple’s native translation capabilities by offering 19 different languages. This in-app translation feature is applicable in various contexts, including individual chats, group conversations, and channel updates. However, it does not extend to GIFs, stickers, document sharing, or location information.

Before you begin using this feature, make sure your app is up-to-date. You can verify this by visiting the App Store and navigating to your profile icon, then selecting WhatsApp to check for any available updates.

To translate a message, simply press and hold the text you wish to translate. This action will isolate the message and present you with several options.

Next, tap on More and then select Translate. From the available languages, choose your desired language for translation.

This innovative translation feature can automatically identify the source language of the selected message. If the text gets edited, you can still hold down the modified text to translate it seamlessly.

Managing Your Language Packs

Upon selecting your initial source and target languages, WhatsApp will prompt you to download the respective language packs directly to your device.

To manage your language packs, access Settings on your iPhone, use the search bar, and type in Translate.

From there, click on Downloaded Languages to review and manage the languages you have downloaded, with the option to add additional languages as needed.

Bear in mind that the download speed for these packs is contingent on your internet connection quality. A slower connection may lead to prolonged download times, while utilizing a Wi-Fi connection can significantly reduce wait times.

Optimizing Your Use of On-Device Mode

Once you have installed the language packs, you will have the capability to translate messages without needing a Wi-Fi or cellular connection. Your iPhone is equipped to handle the entire translation process independently.

To set up your downloaded languages for offline use, go to Settings -> Translate -> Downloaded Languages and ensure you have your preferred languages stored beforehand.

To facilitate the offline functionality of your downloaded packs, remember to enable On-Device Mode.

Currently, this in-app translation feature is the sole option for translating messages on WhatsApp, as Meta has opted not to incorporate Apple’s built-in translation tools. For those wanting additional functionalities like summarizing lengthy conversations or proofreading messages, consider exploring tools powered by Meta AI.
