How to Roll Back Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition to Fix Your Mods

Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition Launches to Celebrate a Decade of Adventure

In a significant announcement made in late October, Bethesda has officially rolled out the Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition on November 10, marking the tenth anniversary of this beloved post-apocalyptic roleplaying game. The latest edition is available for a variety of platforms including PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S|X.

What’s New in the Anniversary Edition?

This revamped edition comes loaded with all six of the official DLCs released to date, which include:

  • Far Harbor
  • Automatron
  • Nuka World
  • Contraptions Workshop
  • Vault-Tec Workshop
  • Wasteland Workshop

In addition to the DLCs, players can look forward to over 150 new Creation Club items. These include fresh quests, unique companions, new armors, weapons, skins, player homes, and numerous objects designed to enhance the Settlements feature. For newcomers, the Anniversary Edition is available at a price point of $59.99. Existing Fallout 4 players can upgrade at $39.99, while those with the Game of the Year Edition can enjoy a steep discount at just $19.99. Notably, a version for the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is set to be released next year.

Modding Challenges: Issues and Solutions

However, players who rely on mods for enhanced gameplay may encounter issues similar to those seen with the Skyrim Anniversary Edition. Many essential mods have ceased functioning due to compatibility issues, primarily because the Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE) no longer operates with the new edition until its developers release an update.

In response, the modding community has swiftly devised a method to revert back to the previous version of the game (v1.10.984), thus retaining mod functionality. Here’s a simplified version of the process:

Guide to Reverting Fallout 4 to Its Previous Version

  1. Launch the Steam console by pressing Win + R and entering steam://open/console.
  2. Input the command: download_depot 377160 377162 5698952341602575696 in the Steam console.
  3. This command prompts Steam to download the Fallout4.exe file (38 MB) from the earlier build, v1.10.984, originally released on May 13, 2024. Once downloaded, navigate to the folder specified in the console log, usually found at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content\app_377160\depot_377162.
  4. Back up your existing executable by going to your game’s installation directory (e.g., C:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Fallout 4) and renaming the current Fallout4.exe to Fallout4_111137.exe. Then, replace that file with the one you just downloaded.
  5. To avoid future issues, disable automatic updates for Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition. Do this by navigating to Steam > Library > Fallout 4 > Properties > Updates and selecting “Only update this game when I launch it”.You’ll now need to launch the game via f4se_loader.exe instead of through Steam.
  6. Finally, right-click on Fallout4.exe, go to Properties, and set it to Read-only to prevent Steam from overwriting the changes.

Players and modders alike can now return to their post-apocalyptic adventures while retaining the customizations they’ve come to love. Enjoy exploring the Wasteland!
