5 Optimize Your GPU Settings
The energy consumption of dedicated graphics processing units (GPUs) is significantly higher compared to integrated GPUs, providing a performance boost in demanding applications like gaming while adversely affecting battery life. If your laptop is equipped with a MUX switch or the option to disable its dedicated GPU, you can substantially improve battery efficiency.
Laptops typically operate under two GPU modes: hybrid and integrated. The hybrid mode activates both GPUs, which, while enhancing performance, can drain the battery quicker. In contrast, using integrated mode effectively shuts down the dedicated GPU, resulting in more sustainable power use. For instance, on my HP Omen Transcend 14, switching to integrated mode extended my battery life from four hours to six or seven hours.
The ability to disable the dedicated GPU varies by model, particularly among entry-level gaming laptops. Therefore, if battery longevity is a priority, consider choosing a laptop that supports this feature.
4 Disable Unnecessary Services
Engaging in some Windows maintenance can enhance both your laptop’s battery performance and overall responsiveness. Windows operates numerous background services, many of which may be unnecessary for your daily tasks.

Consider disabling services such as Windows Search Indexer, Connected User Experiences and Telemetry, and Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS).Disabling these services minimally impacts your overall system while freeing up resources, thus enhancing performance. 3 Explore Laptop Performance Modes
Many high-end laptops come with built-in utilities that allow users to select different power or performance modes, ultimately managing the energy consumption of your CPU and GPU. Although switching to a lower power mode may reduce performance, it can significantly extend battery life.
Accessing these performance modes varies among laptop brands, but utilities like Omen Gaming Hub, MSI Center, Dell Power Manager, and Lenovo Vantage make it easy to configure settings according to your needs.

Most laptop manufacturers set these utilities to automatically switch to a lower power mode when running on battery. In addition, Windows offers three built-in performance options:
- Best Performance: Maximizes performance at the expense of higher power consumption.
- Balanced: Strikes a balance between power draw and system performance.
- Best Power Efficiency: Restricts power to CPU and GPU to conserve battery life.
Typically, the Balanced mode suffices for everyday tasks, while switching to Best Power Efficiency is optimal for maximizing battery duration, albeit with a slight performance trade-off.
For consistent power management, you can configure Windows to automatically switch power plans based on whether your laptop is plugged in or operating on battery:
- Open Windows Settings and navigate to the System section. Click on Power & battery.
- Expand the Power Mode section and select your preferred modes for battery and plugged-in use.
Additionally, Windows has an Energy Saver mode that can automatically activate to further reduce power consumption at various battery levels.
2 Modify Display and RGB Settings
If your laptop features an OLED screen or RGB lighting effects, it’s crucial to adjust these settings when operating on battery power. Display brightness and the keyboard backlighting can significantly deplete your battery more than anticipated.

To conserve battery life, lower your screen brightness to the minimum and disable RGB lighting. If you can’t turn off the keyboard lighting, switching to a solid, low-brightness color helps in saving energy. While RGB settings may add aesthetic value, they can also drain your laptop’s battery.
As always, setting adjustment options may differ based on your laptop model, but these controls are generally available in the OEM-provided utility applications.
1 Leverage Windows Power Settings
Beyond performance modes, Windows offers various power settings that can further extend your battery life. Among these is the Screen and sleep feature, which automatically turns off your display after a user-defined period of inactivity, saving valuable energy:

- PCI Express – Link State Power Management: Set to Moderate Power Savings.
