Alongside the introduction of official Wi-Fi 7 support in Windows 11 version 24H2, which is currently accessible (you can find details on how to install it on compatible devices here and on unsupported devices here), Microsoft is focusing on enhancements related to network capabilities in its operating system. This new feature is now available to the public, but it can also be experienced in one of the latest preview builds.
The new advancement allows users to share their internet connection via a 6GHz hotspot. While stable versions of Windows 11 have traditionally supported 5GHz and 2.4GHz hotspots, the increasing popularity of the 6GHz band has prompted Microsoft to integrate this modern protocol, offering users greater bandwidth and reduced interference.
The feature for creating a 6GHz hotspot is present in Windows 11 build 26120.1912 and newer versions. As this feature rolls out to Windows Insiders gradually, not everyone may have immediate access. However, you can manually enable 6GHz tethering using the ViVeTool application.
- Download ViVeTool from GitHub and extract the files to a convenient location.
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator and navigate to the directory containing the ViVeTool files using the CD command. For instance, if you saved ViVeTool in C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive.
- Input vivetool /enable /id:40466470,48433719 and hit Enter.
- Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
It’s important to note that enabling 6GHz tethering necessitates compatible hardware. Your device must have a Wi-Fi 6E-capable network adapter. For users with Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 5, or older network cards, Windows 11 will restrict connectivity to 5GHz or 2.4GHz hotspots. Additionally, be aware that not every Wi-Fi 6E network card supports the 6GHz hotspot functionality.
If your network adapter is compatible and the feature ID is activated, you can turn on 6GHz tethering by navigating to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Hotspot > Network Properties, then choosing 6GHz from the Network Band drop-down menu.
Thanks to @PhantomOfEarth on X for providing the feature IDs.
