How Space Marine 2 Success Affects Saber Interactive’s Future
Just over two weeks after the successful launch of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, developer Saber Interactive is already witnessing significant benefits from the game’s popularity. In an interview with IGN, Saber Creative Director Tim Willits described Space Marine 2 as the “fastest-selling game of his career,”surpassing even his experiences with iconic franchises at id Software, including Doom and Quake.
While specific sales numbers have yet to be disclosed, publisher Focus Entertainment has confirmed that over two million players joined the game at launch. Space Marine 2 also set the record for the highest concurrent player count on Steam for any game in the Warhammer franchise.
With such impressive success, Willits stated that Space Marine 2 “changes everything”for Saber going forward. This achievement enables the studio to “dream bigger”for future projects.
During a recent company gathering, I delivered a brief 30-second speech, sharing with the entire team that this changes everything we do moving ahead, from our smaller third-party publishing games to our upcoming A Quiet Place next month. We also have Toxic Command coming up with Focus soon. All our endeavors are now transformed by this success.
In the short term, Saber plans to support Space Marine 2 with new content including additional missions, maps, enemies, and weapons. However, the game’s outstanding performance also paves the way for potential story DLC and even the possibility of a Space Marine 3 in the future.
Willits and the game’s director have discussed several story ideas that may be further developed. “We just have to figure it out. I would love to do it,”Willits expressed regarding the next installment of Space Marine. “There are numerous factions and other interesting chapters to explore.”
For the other games Saber has in development, the studio now finds itself with increased resources. This includes a game based on the Jurassic Park franchise and the challenged KOTOR remake, which Willits confirmed is still actively being developed.
At this moment, our focus is on development. We look forward to sharing more updates when the time is right. There you go, brother.
Internally, Willits noted that the staff now exhibits a greater sense of “passion and responsibility”due to the success of Space Marine 2. Saber aims to replicate this triumph by providing free post-launch classes to engage players further.
