Serena Williams’ Dominance at the Miami Open: A Record-Breaking Eight-Time Champion
Up to this point, Serena Williams has been the most accomplished player in the history of the Miami Open.
Despite her tough loss in the 1999 Miami Open final against her sister Venus Williams, Williams has an impressive record at the event with 76 wins out of 85 matches and eight title-winning runs. This includes her first final appearance in 1999 when the tournament was held in Key Biscayne, where she put up a strong fight against her sister before ultimately losing in three sets.
The ex-World No. 1 claimed her inaugural victory at the Miami Open in 2002, defeating the top three seeds Martina Hingis, Venus Williams, and Jennifer Capriati on her way to the title. Williams went on to dominate the tournament, securing consecutive titles in 2003 and 2004, and then again in 2006 and 2007. In 2015, she captured her most recent trophy at the Miami Open, defeating Carla Suarez Navarro in the finals.
Despite retiring from tennis in 2022, Serena Williams’ last appearance in the Miami Open was in 2019. Her impressive record in the tournament is just a small reflection of the significant impact she has had on the sport.
