The Evolution of SOS Flares in Monster Hunter Wilds
When Monster Hunter World debuted, its SOS Flare feature offered a convenient way for players to solicit help while on hunts. With its latest installment, Monster Hunter Wilds, Capcom has enhanced this system by introducing NPC hunters to assist players through the SOS Flare mechanism. During my recent preview at Capcom’s headquarters in Osaka, I had the opportunity to explore this exciting addition, where I discovered NPC allies proved to be surprisingly capable and beneficial, even in this early, non-final build.
Engagement Through SOS Flares
In my experience, SOS Flares could be activated at any moment during a hunt. This flexibility allowed me to temporarily dismiss my loyal Palico—an all-black companion with a remarkable white mustache pattern—in favor of inviting NPC hunters to join the battle. The mechanics for summoning help share similarities with Monster Hunter World: players can access the SOS Flare option through the in-game wheel while exploring, enabling the flare signal to be deployed amidst the action. I utilized this system both during story-driven missions and side quests beyond the main campaign.
A Natural Approach to NPC Arrival
What struck me as innovative is the manner in which NPCs arrive after summoning. Unlike immediate teleportation, there’s a sense of realism; players must find a moment of respite to send up the flare. Monster attacks may interrupt this process, though I noticed that the initial animation of launching the flare gave me a brief window to dodge incoming strikes. Following the signal, my Palico would quickly depart, while it took a short time for the NPCs to reach my location—allowing for some engaging solo gameplay where survival skills are put to the test for a bit.

Dynamic NPCs Enhancing the Experience
Once the NPCs joined the fray, my experience mirrored that of collaborating with real players in Monster Hunter World. While human players contribute to strategic coordination and execution of combos, the NPCs in this early build surprised me with their tactical decisions. They effectively took action, such as healing me when I was on the verge of defeat—behavior I would typically expect from a seasoned player.
More Than Just Assistance
Another aspect I appreciated was how summoning NPC allies enriched the narrative context. Each NPC is not simply a faceless entity; characters like Olivia and Rosso from the Ace Team regularly joined the battle, delivering pertinent remarks that enhanced my immersion. In story quests, their comments seemed to connect with ongoing plot developments, attributing a layer of engagement that goes beyond mere gameplay.
Final Thoughts on NPC Support in Monster Hunter Wilds
My initial impressions of the NPC support through SOS Flares in Monster Hunter Wilds were overwhelmingly positive. Although it is important to note that features may evolve before launch, I foresee the NPC integration as a valuable alternative for players seeking assistance when they either cannot find friends online or prefer a solo approach with occasional help.
