Housemarque Unveils Exciting Gameplay for Saros at State of Play
In an electrifying start to today’s State of Play presentation, Housemarque introduced a thrilling first look at the gameplay of their upcoming title, Saros. The studio confirmed the game will be available on PS5 beginning March 20, 2026, further building on the momentum established by their acclaimed title, Returnal.
Innovative Gameplay Mechanics Expand Upon Returnal’s Legacy
The unveiled trailer was laden with action, clearly demonstrating that Housemarque aims to refine rather than overhaul the successful mechanics featured in Returnal. Notably, players will now have access to an advanced shield system, allowing them to deflect incoming colored projectiles while retaliating with greater force.
Additionally, players will experience a new life system that grants one extra chance per run to revive before unlocking further chances as gameplay progresses. While details on specific modifiers and upgrades remain sparse, hints suggest that players may unlock various forms of extra lives within a single run, enhancing the replayability factor.
Creative Insights from Housemarque’s Team
Gregory Louden, creative director at Housemarque, expressed the intent behind the new gameplay elements in a PlayStation Blog post, stating, “For our first look at gameplay, we wanted to showcase real and unedited action gameplay from Saros. Our aim has been to introduce additional layers of complexity by diversifying the tools available to players.”
Character and Exploration in Saros
Players will take on the role of Arjun, equipped with the advanced Soltari combat suit that offers capabilities such as dashing, melee strikes, and jumping. At the beginning of each run, you’ll select a unique loadout that combines human Soltari weapons and alien Carcosan armaments. In the extended gameplay footage, Arjun utilizes the Soltari Phosphorous Shotgun to combat the menacing machines of an ancient, lost city, showcasing both intense action and intricate enemy bullet patterns.
Expanded Storytelling Elements
Louden also hinted at the narrative depth of Saros without revealing too much.“We are broadening our storytelling approach in this title. The game features grounded voice-overs, captivating cinematics, eerie audio logs, and interactions with a diverse cast of NPCs. You can also discover Soltari Holograms that reveal critical lore about Carcosa’s history as you navigate its threats. We’ll delve into more mysterious narrative sequences later, ”he remarked.
Fans can anticipate Saros arriving on both PS5 and PS5 Pro on March 20, 2026, further enriching the gaming landscape with its innovative mechanics and enthralling storytelling.
