The enduring legacy of the Die Hard franchise is intrinsically tied to the character of John McClane, portrayed by Bruce Willis. While the potential for a sixth installment looms, some may wonder if it’s feasible to continue without the iconic actor. John McClane, the everyman cop with a quip for every situation, first graced the screen in 1988’s Die Hard. The film, known for its clever one-liners and thrilling ’80s action, featured Alan Rickman’s memorable performance as Hans Gruber. It became an instant classic, grossing over $128 million worldwide on a $28 million budget.
This initial success paved the way for a series of sequels. The follow-up, Die Hard 2, premiered in 1990, and was succeeded by Die Hard with a Vengeance in 1995, which became the highest-grossing film of that year with over $366 million in earnings. The franchise peaked in 2007 with Live Free or Die Hard, which grossed over $388 million globally. However, 2013’s A Good Day to Die Hard suffered critical backlash, holding a mere 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, leading several fans to question the future of the series.
The Reasons Behind Bruce Willis’s Absence
A Retirement Fueled by Health Concerns

Bruce Willis’s potential return for Die Hard 6 has been sidelined due to his retirement from acting. In 2022, his family publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with aphasia, a condition affecting cognitive functions related to speech and comprehension, prompting his withdrawal from the film industry.
Tragically, the actor’s health has declined further. By 2023, Willis’s family announced he was diagnosed with Frontotemporal dementia, a condition that complicates language skills and can dramatically alter personality traits (NBC News). Prior to this announcement, rumors about his cognitive struggles had circulated during the early 2020s, evidenced by his performances in many lower-budget films from Emmet/Furla Oasis. During filming of Out of Death, crew members expressed concern over his ability to recall lines, resorting to using an earpiece to feed him his dialogue (Los Angeles Times).
Many of these projects received unfavorable reviews, leading the Golden Raspberry Awards in 2021 to establish a “Worst Bruce Willis Performance”category, highlighting the actor’s numerous releases that year. However, following his withdrawal from acting due to health reasons, the organization revoked this award in 2022, acknowledging the insensitivity of recognizing an ailing artist in such a manner.
The Future of Die Hard 6 Without Willis
Integrating Existing Footage of Willis

Although current industry trends suggest Die Hard 6 may not materialize, the character of John McClane could still have a presence in potential future installments. Willis had previously indicated a desire to wrap up his portrayal of McClane; however, a properly executed ending may not be possible if a new film doesn’t come to fruition.
A significant development occurred in 2018 when producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura pitched a treatment titled McClane, inspired by the narrative structure of The Godfather Part II. This concept aimed to intertwine the storylines of a younger McClane and Holly, juxtaposed with their present-day selves. However, following the 2019 Disney/Fox merger, all plans halted. By 2021, it was confirmed that Die Hard 6 would not progress, as director Len Wiseman was reassigned to helm the upcoming John Wick spinoff, Ballerina, set for spring 2025.
Despite these obstacles, there remains potential for the franchise to continue. It would be feasible to include archival footage of Willis from earlier films to pay homage to the character while maintaining continuity.
Honoring Bruce Willis While Forging Ahead
Samuel L. Jackson’s Zeus: The New Face of Die Hard

Regardless of whether the story remains a prequel, the Die Hard franchise will undoubtedly feel different without Bruce Willis’s signature portrayal of McClane. His character is not just integral; it’s a cornerstone that has shaped Willis’s illustrious career. The challenge for any new installment is to proceed without his character, especially considering he has starred in all five previous films.
A strategic direction might involve introducing a new lead character from the Die Hard universe. Samuel L. Jackson’s Zeus Carver emerges as a prime candidate, having been McClane’s partner in Die Hard with a Vengeance. Given Jackson’s successful experience in anchoring franchises—as seen with his iconic role as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe—he possesses the charisma and vision to honor the legacy of Willis while revitalizing the franchise.
Ultimately, if Die Hard 6 were to begin anew without John McClane, Jackson could lead the way, ensuring that the series evolves while maintaining the spirit of its beloved predecessor.
