Despite the anticipation for the release of Homeworld 3, which has been in development for several years, there is now news of another installment in the space-based RTS game franchise. Titled Homeworld: Vast Reaches, this game will be available for the Meta Quest 2 and 3 virtual reality headsets.
According to a press release, FarBridge will be collaborating with Gearbox Entertainment, the owner of the Homeworld franchise, to develop and publish the first virtual reality installment of the series, titled Homeworld: Vast Reaches. This announcement comes after Gearbox was acquired by Take-Two Interactive.
The game’s storyline can be summarized as follows:
Set between the events of Homeworld 1 and Homeworld 2, you take on the role of Tyrra Soban, a new Fleet Command under the guidance of Karan S’jet, the legendary original Fleet Command and hero of Homeworld War. The original Kushan Mothership is pulled from retirement to serve as the flagship of a new fleet. Together Tyrra and Karan face a new threat, the Radaa, duplicitous interstellar traders who want to obtain your hyperspace core and don’t care if they destroy your Homeworld to get it.
FarBridge has announced that Homeworld: Vast Reaches will offer a single-player game mode, catering to owners of the Meta Quest 2 and 3 headsets. The game’s VR design will allow players to construct their ships, devise tactics, and issue combat commands from a variety of perspectives. FarBridge has disclosed that the release of the highly anticipated game is scheduled for a later date in 2024.
This indicates that two new Homeworld games will be released this year. Blackbird Interactive, the developer, is on the verge of releasing Homeworld 3, which has been highly anticipated and frequently delayed, as the latest installment in the Homeworld series. Blackbird has announced that the game will be available on May 13, following extensive modifications and enhancements based on feedback from external players.
