Homeworld 3: Upcoming Update and DLC Marks End of Development

Launched in May, the real-time strategy game Homeworld 3 has been actively supported by Blackbird Interactive. Initially, a substantial year-long content plan was expected; however, the studio announced in September that they would consolidate these efforts into a single, significant update and DLC slated for release in late 2024. As excitement builds for this upcoming “mother-ship”sized update, there are some bittersweet developments for the game’s dedicated fanbase.

Update 1.3: New Features and Enhancements

The eagerly awaited update 1.3 is set to launch on November 21. This release promises a complete overhaul of combat balance, introduces new abilities usable across all game modes, and implements various changes to the War Games feature, reflecting player feedback. Users can expect a host of improvements that enhance overall gameplay experience.

Empowering the Modding Community

In a bid to enrich the game’s modding landscape, Homeworld 3‘s modding tools will also receive a significant upgrade. Players will now be able to integrate custom Unreal Blueprints into the game, as well as access the original blueprints from the campaign missions. According to the developers, “This should further empower the modding community to make more awesome creations.”For detailed insights into what’s included in this update, check the complete patch notes here.

New Content: Premium DLC Packs

On the same day, fans can look forward to the release of two premium DLC packs. These additions will introduce the Somtaaw and Taiidan factions, each featuring unique gameplay mechanics and dedicated fleets within the War Games mode.

A Farewell to the Franchise

Despite these exciting developments, Blackbird Interactive has revealed that this will be the final content update for Homeworld 3, marking the conclusion of their post-launch strategy. The studio is also expected to part ways with both the franchise and the game’s publisher, Gearbox.

In a heartfelt farewell, Blackbird Interactive acknowledged the significant impact of working within the Homeworld universe: “This journey has profoundly affected every member of our team. We extend sincere thanks to Gearbox Publishing for our collaboration and to you, the fans, who have supported Homeworld for decades.”

Looking Ahead

After update 1.4 rolls out, Gearbox plans to continue managing the game by addressing critical issues as they arise and maintaining functionality for multiplayer servers and modding support in the background.
