Team Cherry, the talented Australian indie studio, has issued a promising update about the highly anticipated Metroidvania title, Hollow Knight: Silksong. This sequel has sparked much speculation and humor within the gaming community due to its vague release timeline, which remains unfulfilled even six years post-announcement.
The original Hollow Knight, launched in 2017, captured players’ hearts by placing them in the role of a silent warrior exploring a beautifully crafted underground kingdom, filled with complex enemies and challenging bosses. The game garnered acclaim for its stunning visuals, rich soundscapes, and intricate gameplay, propelling Team Cherry to quickly pursue downloadable content (DLC). However, the project expanded significantly, evolving into what is now Hollow Knight: Silksong after being officially revealed in February 2019. Yet, as fans wait restlessly for a release date, frustration is building.
In a recent tweet, Matthew Griffin, Team Cherry’s head of marketing and publishing, provided reassurance to fans expressing doubts about the game’s development status. He confirmed that Hollow Knight: Silksong is indeed “real, progressing, and will release.”Although no additional specifics were shared, this affirmation has revived hopes among players that further updates might be forthcoming, particularly in 2025. The conspicuous absence of the game from major events like Gamescom 2024 and The Game Awards 2024 has only intensified the anticipation of longtime fans.

Despite ongoing speculation about the game being trapped in development purgatory, a playtester emerged in June 2024 to counter these claims. Initially, Team Cherry had aimed for a release within the first half of 2023. However, admitting that additional time was necessary for development, they have left fans in suspense regarding further updates. When players finally step into the shoes of Hornet, the new protagonist, they will explore the eerie kingdom of Pharloom. Team Cherry has promised a grander experience compared to its predecessor, boasting more than 100 checkpoints and approximately 165 unique enemies.

Though updates about the game remain limited, speculation surrounds its potential release on the Switch 2. Fans theorize that Team Cherry might be optimizing Hollow Knight: Silksong for the newly unveiled console. Some enthusiasts are hopeful that February 14 could mark a significant announcement, commemorating the date when the game was first revealed back in 2019. As rumors circulate and excitement builds over the internet, anticipation persists that players may finally get their hands on Hollow Knight: Silksong sometime in 2025.
