In Hollow Knight: Silksong, players may find the lack of structured training somewhat disconcerting. Team Cherry seems to assume that players have acquired enough expertise from the original game. As a result, players must navigate this new title largely on their own, piecing together mechanics as they progress.
If you’re looking to hone your gaming skills, the experience may feel daunting, but don’t worry; there are ways to adapt.
One particular mechanic that has left many players scratching their heads is the R3 (on PlayStation) or RS (on Xbox) button input, which involves pressing the right joystick. What purpose does this mysterious command serve? Allow me to elucidate this feature, known as “Challenge.”
Understanding the Challenge Mechanic
Interestingly, the R3 function isn’t explicitly detailed in the Controller Options menu of Silksong. Even during the process of customizing your controls, you won’t find any mention of its functionality.
However, if you’ve clicked the button while navigating through the game, you may have noticed some unusual effects. While many players, including myself, initially find it confusing, the action triggers a brief animation where Hornet spins a fast-moving strand of silk around her. This action does not result in any damage when used on an enemy. So, what does it really signify?

According to the PC keyboard mapping, this specific action is officially termed “Challenge, ”with the default key assigned to the V key. Great! Now, we have a name, but what exactly does the “Challenge”function accomplish?
Utilizing the Challenge Feature

The primary purpose of the Challenge feature is to draw the aggression of enemies. But why would you want to do this? Here are a couple of useful applications:
- Isolating Enemies: Encounter a group of enemies that haven’t yet spotted you? Use the Challenge mechanic from a distance to lure the nearest foe, enabling you to tackle them one-on-one for easier combat management.
- Clearing the Path: Need to traverse a small platform occupied by an enemy? Use Challenge to coax the enemy away, giving you the opportunity to land safely. Be prepared for a quick reaction if they come after you, but at least you’ll have a clear jump.
The term “Challenge”suggests there might be additional, yet undiscovered functionalities available for this mechanism. Could there be scenarios where you can Challenge other characters that typically remain non-hostile? If that feature exists, we’ll certainly keep you updated!
For now, the mystery surrounding the R3 animation has been unraveled!
