Having cherished my time with Demon’s Souls, I’ve developed a lasting admiration for gimmick boss fights. This love was rekindled while navigating the enchanting world of Silksong, as I discovered that it, too, offers an array of inventive boss encounters. Among these, The Father of the Flame in the Wisp Thicket stood out as a truly memorable challenge.
As a seasoned player, I tend to approach most boss battles as a “pogo boss”encounter. To my delight, The Father of the Flame plays beautifully into this strategy. Nevertheless, I recognize that if you’re not yet adept at this style, the fight may prove quite daunting. Therefore, I aim to share my insights and help you tackle this fiery opponent effectively.
Where to Find The Father of the Flame

The Father of the Flame is located in the optional area known as Wisp Thicket—a region teeming with dangerous foes capable of launching explosive fireballs. This makes mastering Patches O’Houlihan’s five ‘D’s of dodgeball particularly essential.
To reach Wisp Thicket, ensure you have the Faydown Cloak, necessary for traversing the pathways through the towers in Greymoor. Upon entering Wisp Thicket, make your way left from the starting point, but first, explore the room on the right. Use your needle to strike the hanging bags overhead, which will reveal a bench for resting, thus minimizing your runback time.
Although some platforming is needed to access the boss, utilizing your Clawline can help bypass most enemies. Remember that healing isn’t an option during the Father of the Flame fight, so every mask you retain will be crucial. Continue along the path until you reach an area marked with Bellhart colors—this signals your approach to a uniquely challenging boss encounter.
Preparation for the Father of the Flame Fight

Facing the Father of the Flame requires a specific approach due to the unusual nature of this encounter. Below is an optimal setup to help you conquer this formidable boss:
Tool/Crest Type | Tool Crest |
---|---|
Crest | Crest of the Reaper |
Red Tool | Cogfly |
Conchcutter | |
Blue Tools | Reserve Bind |
Multibinder | |
Yellow Tools | Magnetite Dice |
N/A |
To start, I highly recommend the Crest of the Reaper. This particular crest excels in enabling consistent pogo attacks, which are crucial for this battle. When selecting your red tools, choose options that require minimal aim or precision timing, such as Cogfly or Conchcutter—assuming you’ve managed to navigate through the Sands of Karak to obtain it.
For your blue tools, opt for the Multibinder and Reserve Bind. Since this encounter does not allow for additional silk generation during the fight, having a heal as a backup and restoring masks from your healing will be invaluable. As for yellow tools, while they may not significantly affect this fight, I’d suggest taking the Magnetite Dice in hopes of dodging some damage.
Strategies to Defeat The Father of the Flame
Phase One
Unlike typical boss encounters, The Father of the Flame relies on five lanterns scattered around the arena, each serving as a weak point that players must target through clever platforming and pogo tactics.
While evading the tracking explosive wisps, players upgraded twice by this point should strike each lantern eight times to clear them. To navigate this phase effectively, focus on the higher lanterns first, as they present a greater challenge. Once the higher lanterns are down, the lower ones will be easier to clear.
Your double jump will be a vital asset in this fight, regenerating with each successful pogo. When wisps lock onto your position, time your pogo to gain elevation and avoid their charge. It’s crucial to remain calm and adapt to your surroundings; rather than fixating on a single target, shift focus as needed to avoid being cornered.
Clearing all lanterns will activate the second phase of the fight.
Phase Two
With the lanterns gone, the Father of the Flame’s core is now accessible. This section begins with a barrage of fireballs, so be prepared to move cautiously, attempting to position yourself between the incoming attacks.
Once the fireball onslaught ceases, seize the moment to leap up and strike the core. Keep an eye on the spawned wisps and utilize your double jump to maintain pressure on the boss while evading damage. Be attentive; after the wisps have been dispatched, the fireball assault will resume. If you’re airborne during this attack, you’ll be vulnerable, so drop to the ground to protect yourself.
Finally, once the battle concludes, be sure to position yourself away from the last explosion, which can knock you out if you’re too close. Once you’ve gained adequate distance, you will have emerged victorious against The Father of the Flame.
What You Earn for Defeating The Father of the Flame

Upon vanquishing this formidable foe, you will acquire the Wispfire Lantern—a passive tool that enhances your offensive capabilities by consuming your silk.
When equipped, the Wispfire Lantern automatically generates a wisp that homes in on nearby enemies, delivering a powerful attack. While it provides significant offensive potential, be mindful that your silk will be continuously used, which may limit your healing options. Players who prefer a more aggressive playstyle will find this tool advantageous. However, those who rely heavily on silk for healing might need to reconsider its use.
