If you’re diving into Steel Soul Mode in Hollow Knight: Silksong, brace yourself for a formidable challenge. This unique gameplay experience not only tests your skills but also transforms you into a more adept player.
As you embark on this journey, you’ll discover important differences compared to a regular playthrough. Key among them is the single life you have, but there’s much more to explore—new areas, exciting tools, vibrant characters, and a fresh quest await you!
Prepare yourself by equipping the Fractured Mask as you set off into the expansive and perilous world. Your adventure will lead you to complete the quest titled A Vassal Lost in Hollow Knight: Silksong.
Starting A Vassal Lost
Your quest begins by locating a secret room hidden in the Blasted Steps. Start your journey at the Bellway Station in Shellwood, moving west across the bridge into the Blasted Steps.
Ascend through the tunnels until you reach the summit, then venture east into the expansive vertical chamber that cuts through the center of the biome. Continue into the next chamber where you initially encountered Shakra. Climb to the top, but instead of heading left, take a right and slide down to discover a breakable wall. Here, you will encounter the Silkeater and proceed to the right to find a room specifically intended for Steel Soul Mode.
In this room, you’ll meet Steel Seer Zi, who will task you with locating the missing vassal.
Locating the Vassal

Upon checking your map, you will notice three symbols denoting the vassal’s resting spots. Your task is to visit these locations and pinpoint their whereabouts, but keep in mind that these spots vary for each player.
For instance, my designated spots were as follows:
- Far Fields: Located over the bone bridge amidst the Flexile Spine enemies.
- High Halls: At the summit of the eastern tower, adjacent to the rosary chest.
- Sands of Karak: Situated just to the left of the Coral Tower entrance.
Additionally, there are a total of six potential spawn points. The other three are:
- Moss Grotto: Just below the small bridge leading to the Blasted Steps.
- Petrified Ducts: Found in the far east, above the Pale Lake and against the wall near the light shaft, not far from the start of the Mister Mushroom Quest.
- Shellwood: Northeast of the Sister Splinter battle, found at the end of a short corridor.
To successfully complete this quest, you’ll likely need to be well-progressed into the game, ideally past a good portion of Act 2 where you can acquire the Clawline.
The Steel Seer’s Directive

After visiting each location and examining the items left behind, return to Steel Seer Zi in the Blasted Steps. They will instruct you to locate Sula, who can be found in a new cave just to the left of the Chapel of the Wanderer in Bonegrave.
Make your way to Bone Bottom and proceed as far left as possible. If you haven’t traversed Bonegrave yet, you can access it by utilizing the Cling Grip to ascend the western wall or by navigating through a simple door in the Wormways and heading south.
Facing the Summoned Saviour
Before engaging in battle, ensure you have a sufficient number of masks. Though this encounter is relatively straightforward, a few careless mistakes can result in significant damage, which is especially critical in Steel Soul mode. Stay calm and avoid spamming your attacks.
First, ensure your Fractured Mask is equipped and that you have enough silk for at least one heal in case of emergency. Being prepared is essential!
If your masks are running low, don’t hesitate to exit and regroup. Steel Soul mode is a demanding experience, and there is no need to put yourself at unnecessary risk.
Attack Name |
Description |
Avoidance Strategy |
---|---|---|
Shadow Dash |
The Summoned Saviour performs a quick slashing attack of 1–2 strikes in rapid succession. |
Maintain your distance and wait for the boss to initiate movement before counterattacking. Avoid aggressive tactics. |
Shredding Circle |
The boss executes a 360-degree whirlwind attack. |
This attack has a large area of effect, so be ready to dash away as it prepares to strike. |
Dark Bolt |
The boss draws in darkness from one side and then releases three bolts towards you. |
Try to remain near the ground throughout the fight; jump over these projectiles as they come your way. |
Liquid Void |
The Summoned Saviour releases four blobs of void which, upon impact, erupt into damaging tendrils. |
This can be a tricky attack. Instead of trying to weave between blobs, dash to the opposite wall and refrain from attacking during this time to avoid damage. |
This boss displays somewhat robotic patterns to its movements. In my first attempt, I was overly aggressive, attempting to pogo and damage it relentlessly.
However, a more effective approach is to keep your distance and wait for the boss to complete its actions before rushing in for a few quick hits. This battle strategy mirrors that used against the Cogwork Dancers.
Quest Conclusion

Upon defeating the boss, return to Steel Seer Zi for the conclusion of your quest. They will gladly permit Sula to live, marking the end of your journey.Congratulations! You have completed the quest!
In reward, you’ll receive the Growstone item. While this isn’t exactly a tool, it functions similarly to an infinitely recharging Beast Shard. When utilized, it grants you around 130 Shell Shards which can be used for crafting, before entering a dormant phase to recharge again.
Though this proves beneficial for Steel Soul players, it’s not necessarily a game-changer. It might be quicker to farm enemies for Shell Shards manually. Still, free currency is never something to dismiss!
