Hitman Developer Reports James Bond Game Progress, Plans for Trilogy Expansion
In 2020, it was announced that IO Interactive, the studio behind the Hitman series, was venturing into the universe of James Bond with plans to create a fresh game. The developers unveiled that Project 007 would delve into the origins of the iconic MI6 agent, developing a unique narrative rather than adhering to existing film storylines. Although a new trailer has yet to be released, the team has shared some intriguing insights about the project during an interview.
In a discussion with IGN, IO Interactive’s CEO, Hakan Abrak, mentioned that after two decades spent crafting the Hitman universe, the team has gained valuable experience in creating thrilling special agent experiences. He expressed enthusiasm about narrating an original tale centered around a young Bond, specifically tailored for gamers, rather than following the trajectory of any film.
“This opportunity is incredibly thrilling, given all the history and tradition associated with Bond. We’re eager to create a young Bond for gamers—a character they can relate to and grow alongside,”Abrak stated. He conveyed optimism about the project’s trajectory, suggesting that “we’re just at the outset of crafting a story that could potentially evolve into a significant trilogy down the line.”
The most recent bond game released was 007 Legends, which came out in 2012 through Activision. This game featured a campaign that took players through the various eras of different actors who portrayed Bond. Since then, the franchise has seen little activity in gaming, aside from the 2023 re-release of GoldenEye 007 for Xbox and Switch platforms.
“I don’t want to oversell it, but I genuinely hope we can create something that will define the future of James Bond in the gaming industry,”Abrak remarked. “Our ambition isn’t just to develop a single game but to establish a lasting universe for gamers to enjoy and grow with alongside the cinematic Bond.”
According to the CEO, fans can expect to receive additional updates about IO’s James Bond game “in due time,”assuring that “production is progressing exceptionally well.”However, no specific timeline for release or targeted platforms has been disclosed yet.
