Video Game Industry Begins 2026 with Notable Setbacks
The video game industry has entered the new year marked by significant layoffs and studio closures. After a previous year’s kickoff featuring a major free-to-play game that soared in popularity, this year’s introduction showcases a starkly contrasting narrative.Highguard, a recently launched free-to-play title from the talented team at Wildlight Entertainment, comprised of ex-developers from Apex Legends, has unfortunately emerged as a notable failure.
Highguard’s Launch and Initial Response
After its unveiling at The Game Awards 2025, anticipation grew online, despite the game being unplayable at that time. Wildlight maintained a low profile, focusing on the upcoming January 26, 2026 launch. Upon its debut, the game attracted 97, 000 concurrent players on Steam; however, this initial success did not sustain momentum. User reviews highlighted numerous issues, leading to Wildlight’s decision to lay off most of its development team just two weeks post-launch.
Insights into the Failure of Highguard
A former developer shared insights regarding the circumstances surrounding Highguard’s disappointing performance. A recent report by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg sheds light on the reasons behind the studio’s turmoil, revealing critical perspectives from former developers.
The Role of Leadership and Testing Oversights
According to Schreier’s sources, the core issue stemmed from the “hubris“of Highguard’s leadership, who believed they could replicate the instant viral success achieved by Apex Legends upon its surprise launch. However, the report also highlights significant flaws in testing protocols that contributed to the game’s overall failure.
One critical oversight involved the testing environment: the team conducted evaluations with external players while disabling voice communication. This conditioning led to a markedly different experience compared to a standard gaming scenario where players could communicate verbally. Highguard features complex systems that require player collaboration, and without verbal interaction, user testing feedback skewed predominantly negative. Additionally, the presence of Wildlight team members during playtesting may have compromised the accuracy of the results they received.
The Future for Wildlight Entertainment
While the deficiencies in testing and leadership decisions significantly impacted Highguard, these factors alone do not encapsulate the entirety of its failure. Remaining personnel at Wildlight now number “less than 20 people“, as they aim to make necessary adjustments to the troubled title. If they manage to turn things around, it could serve as a remarkable comeback story within the industry.
However, relying on such slim chances for recovery may itself reflect a different form of hubris. Nonetheless, the gaming community often rallies behind studios that strive to overcome adversity, prompting hope that resilience can replace defeat.
