“He’s just blowing smoke”: Former NBA champ casts doubt over LeBron James’ retirement hint
Despite being in his 21st season, LeBron James still has some time left in the NBA. Though he has mentioned retirement, one former champion remains skeptical of his statements.
Following an impressive performance against the Brooklyn Nets, LeBron remained a hot topic on Monday’s episode of “Undisputed.”When Paul Pierce was asked about LeBron’s postgame comment regarding retirement, he explained his reasons for not buying into it.
“I can pin him in at least two years,”Pierce said. “For one, he said he wanted to play with his son. Say Bronny comes out this year, we already know we got next year.
“He’s just blowing smoke. He said he was going to retire last year didn’t he? He started contemplating retirement.”
These statements about retirement were made immediately after a stellar performance by the 20-time All-Star. In a 37-minute game against the Brooklyn Nets, LeBron James scored 40 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out five assists, leading the LA Lakers to victory.
Although he is currently the oldest player in the NBA, LeBron continues to demonstrate his significance on the court. This season, he maintains an average of 25.4 PPG, 7.3 RPG, and 8.1 APG.
LeBron James addresses retirement rumors after triumphant win against Nets
After delivering one of his strongest scoring performances this season, LeBron James was questioned about his longevity in the NBA. While the four-time MVP did not specify a specific timeframe, he acknowledged that his time in the league is finite.
“Not very long,”LeBron said. “I’m on the other side of the hill. I’m not going to play another 21 years, that’s for damn sure. Not very long. I don’t know when that door will close as far as when I’ll retire, but I don’t have much time left.”
Paul Pierce previously acknowledged that LeBron has previously discussed the potential end of his playing career. During last year’s postseason, he sparked controversy by mentioning retirement following the Lakers’ defeat in the conference finals against the Denver Nuggets.
Despite being one of the top stars in the NBA, LeBron has shown that he is still capable of performing at a high level. However, it is inevitable that Father Time catches up with everyone eventually. The question remains as to when the accumulated mileage from LeBron’s two-decade long career will begin to affect him.
According to Pierce, it is highly probable that LeBron will continue playing for a few more seasons. He has expressed his desire to join his son in the NBA, and this aspiration is on the verge of becoming a reality. As Bronny James will be eligible for the draft this summer, the father-son duo may have the opportunity to play together professionally as early as next season.
It is important to also keep an eye on LeBron James’ contract status in light of these remarks. Currently, the star forward has the option to extend his contract for one more season, which would expire in 2025.
