Herdling Game Review: A Magical Experience

Exploring the Enchanting World of *Herdling*

As an enthusiast of urban fantasy, I find immense joy in the ways folklore and fairytales are reimagined in modern literature and media. While these narratives have flourished in books, they remain relatively unexplored in the gaming industry. However, *Herdling* stands out as a fascinating exception. This game skillfully weaves urban fantasy with charming elements, offering players a delightful experience that combines social interaction with unique creatures.

A Glimpse into the Game’s Setting

In *Herdling*, players assume the role of a character living beneath a bridge in a town with an unsettling atmosphere. While the backstory isn’t overtly elaborated, it’s clear that the town has experienced a significant, distressing event. This ominous undertone permeates the environment, yet the presence of life persists. Upon venturing outside, our protagonist encounters a Calicorn—a whimsical creature with a box curiously affixed to its head. Though unfamiliar, it’s quickly apparent that this animal can be tamed. So begins the adventure as players guide Calicorns through the city and into the wild.

Gameplay Mechanics

At its core, *Herdling* is an engaging adventure game characterized by meaningful actions rather than dialogue. After assisting the initial Calicorn, players are tasked with gathering more of these delightful creatures and guiding them into larger natural spaces beyond the urban environment. Players will encounter landmarks such as a still-operating farm and train tracks, each contributing to the immersive atmosphere as they journey toward the unknown.

Puzzles and Adventures Await

Throughout the game, players will face light puzzles. For instance, some Calicorns may require clever navigation to join the herd, whether it’s passing through a closed door or escaping from potential threats. Timing becomes essential, as dashing through certain flowers is crucial for building speed and successfully maneuvering through various obstacles.

Interactive Creature Dynamics

One of the game’s standout features is the intuitive control system. Players can direct Calicorns simply by facing a direction and pressing a button, with the option to apply a stronger command by holding down the button. The responsiveness is commendable, allowing for smooth interactions, even when the creatures exhibit personalities as noted in the herd summary. Notably, even the most mischievous of Calicorns seem to heed the player’s commands during critical moments, fostering a sense of companionship.

This bond is further enhanced through interactions like petting the creatures after moments of exploration or grooming them after passing through foliage. These small gestures cultivate a feeling of care, reminding players that their Calicorns are not just mere avatars to direct but companions on this journey. The collaborative moments, where Calicorns assist in overcoming obstacles, further reinforce the theme of teamwork.

Technical Observations

Despite the enchanting qualities of *Herdling*, my initial experience was not without its flaws. On the Nintendo Switch, I encountered occasional camera issues that disrupted gameplay. At times, the camera would inexplicably clip through the ground, obscuring visibility of both the player character and the Calicorns. Although moving the character forward or restarting the game could resolve these glitches, the occurrences were somewhat distracting.

For gamers particularly focused on visuals, the Switch version may not be the ideal choice. While the game boasts visually stunning environments and character designs, it appears less crisp compared to other platforms. Even with the advancements of the Switch 2, the graphical fidelity did not significantly improve. Nevertheless, the seamless gameplay experience and the cozy feel of playing in handheld mode compensated for this shortcoming.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, any concerns I had about *Herdling* were swiftly overshadowed after engaging with the game for a short time. Despite minor technical glitches, the pleasure of guiding these whimsical creatures through an enchanting environment is an experience that transcends the challenges. The soothing narrative and captivating gameplay come together to create a magical journey, one I wholeheartedly recommend.

*Herdling* is set to release on August 21, 2025, for the Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. For more information, visit the official website.
