Overview of Squad Dynamics in Helldivers 2
- Initial design considerations for Helldivers 2 included larger squads of up to five players, but balancing issues led to a cap at four.
- The game promotes cooperative gameplay, and the four-player squad size has been identified as optimal for player engagement.
Recent discussions with a former team member from Arrowhead Studios shed light on the development journey of Helldivers 2. Initially, the studio experimented with teams of five. However, through extensive playtesting, they realized that a four-player limit was not only more manageable but also enhanced the game’s core experience. This four-player format has become a distinctive characteristic of Helldivers 2, though some players continue to express interest in larger teams.
At its essence, Helldivers 2 is crafted as a cooperative gameplay experience. While solo players can navigate the challenges posed by the Automatons and Terminids, the game truly flourishes with a full squad of four. The design ethos emphasizes teamwork, as highlighted by the diverse mission objectives that require coordination. Nonetheless, the dynamics shift when attempting to integrate a fifth player, presenting challenges that Arrowhead’s team has candidly acknowledged.
During a recent Q&A session, Patrik Lasota, the former design director for Helldivers 2, elaborated on the initial vision for the game, which included functionality for five-player teams. However, balancing gameplay and mechanics proved difficult, necessitating a return to four-player squads. Lasota noted, “When you’re four people playing, if a fifth joins you, suddenly you’re a three stack and a two stack. It creates this unbalance. But if you’re five people and someone joins, you’re two three stacks and you’re three groups instead of one becoming a pair.” He went on to mention how it’s a challenge to ensure that all five players can engage actively in the gameplay, often leading to some players feeling sidelined.
Insights from Former Helldivers 2 Developer on Five-Player Teams

The challenges of incorporating five-player teams also affected the game’s Stratagems, which are critical for executing strategies during battles. While four-player squads offer a streamlined selection of Stratagems, Lasota pointed out that having a larger team could lead to an overabundance of choices.“It just turned the game into…you didn’t really have to make any choices when it came to stratagems, ” he noted, suggesting that a higher degree of complexity might dilute the strategic planning that players engage in before matches.
The community aspect of Helldivers 2 is vital, with Arrowhead Studios taking player feedback seriously. The game has achieved remarkable success, with Helldivers 2 recently seeing impressive milestones. As players explore the current Omens of Tyranny update, there are exciting enhancements planned for Helldivers 2 in 2025.
