- Using the Comms Wheel in Helldivers 2
Effective communication among team members is crucial in Helldivers 2. This cooperative shooter supports voice chat and text input, but sometimes, the in-game ping system is the quickest way to indicate points of interest. Utilizing this system saves time and enhances teamwork.
This skill becomes particularly essential when facing higher difficulty levels. Some missions occur at night or on planets enveloped in smoke or gas, which obscures visibility. In situations where waves of enemies are converging, a well-placed ping can quickly direct teammates to focus fire on a specific target or call for assistance.
However, Helldivers 2 does not explicitly detail how to tag enemies and locations within your view and on the map, each serving different purposes. Though it may not be well-known among newcomers, proficiency with the ping system is beneficial for all players.
Updated February 15, 2025, by Saqib Mansoor: As Helldivers 2 celebrates its one-year anniversary, many players still remain unaware of the integrated communications wheel. This guide has been enhanced with clearer instructions for accessing and utilizing the comms wheel for effective gameplay communication.
Pinging Enemies and Objectives

On PlayStation 5, press the R1 button, or the Q key on PC, to mark points of interest. Marked enemies will feature a red crosshair, while other entities like buildings or terrain will show a white eye icon. To remove the mark, simply ping the same object again.
Additionally, pinged enemies and objectives display their distance, allowing for precise coordination, particularly beneficial for snipers who need to gauge enemy proximity.
Keep in mind that your pings disappear after a few seconds. Therefore, it’s crucial to mark only significant objectives to avoid overwhelming your teammates with unnecessary alerts. Regularly refreshing your pings can keep teammates informed of critical updates, such as the movements of formidable foes like the Bile Titan bug.
You can ping multiple targets simultaneously, ensuring all teammates, regardless of whether they’re on PlayStation 5 or PC, receive the information.
Marking Locations on the Mini-Map

To access the mini-map, press the Touchpad on PlayStation 5 or the Tab key on PC. For PC users, hold the right-click button and maneuver your mouse to explore the map. A left-click will place a ping anywhere before you exit.
PlayStation 5 users can perform a similar action by using the joystick to navigate and pressing X to mark a location on the mini-map.
There are two main reasons for marking locations on the mini-map:
- To signal objectives out of your direct line of sight, such as optional areas that may contain valuable Samples for your ship.
- Locations marked on the mini-map remain visible longer than temporary pings, expiring only when canceled or reached. This feature is exceptionally helpful when players stray while searching for Medals and need to return to the extraction zone efficiently.
Utilizing the Comms Wheel

Helldivers 2 incorporates a comms wheel featuring pre-set voice lines for streamlined communication with teammates. To open the comms wheel, hold R1 on PlayStation 5 or Q on PC. This action brings up a radial menu displaying options like “Follow Me, ””Need Supplies, ””Thanks, ””Yes, ”and “No.”Navigate these options using your mouse or the right analog stick and release R1/Q to transmit the chosen phrase to nearby allies.
The comms wheel simplifies critical team interactions, such as coordinating efforts on objectives or discussing strategic retreats from perilous encounters. Responding “No”can prevent impulsively attacking a large enemy nest, while a simple “Sorry”can ease tensions after a friendly fire incident.
Incorporating these communication methods effectively can greatly enhance your group dynamic and success in Helldivers 2.
