Disney XD has a reputation for launching standout animated series every few years. Notable titles include Gravity Falls, followed by Star vs. the Forces of Evil, and most recently, The Owl House, which aired from 2020 until 2023. This series garnered a dedicated fanbase, not only due to its captivating narrative but also for its notable representation of LGBTQ+ characters, which was perceived as far more progressive than the typical offerings from Disney.
Despite its popularity, The Owl House suffered an abrupt conclusion when Disney executives decided to truncate its third and final season, as articulated by creator Dana Terrace, who mentioned the show did not align with Disney’s “brand.”Fortunately for fans, Terrace is back with a new project titled Knights of Guinevere, co-created alongside fellow writers John Bailey Owen and Zach Marcus from The Owl House.
What’s particularly noteworthy about Knights of Guinevere is its production by the independent animation studio GLITCH. This venture marks a significant shift, as the series will be released on YouTube rather than major streaming platforms. GLITCH is known for other animated offerings such as Digital Circus and Murder Drones, and this project will represent their inaugural endeavor into 2D animation.
Celebrating Indie Animation
The teaser for Knights of Guinevere captivates audiences right from the start. It transitions from a Snow White-esque forest scene to a darker setting where a woman with a tentacle arm battles in a lab. This shift raises the question: Why would Dana Terrace, who previously partnered with Disney, transition to independent animation?
The current landscape of the U.S. animation industry is challenging. Animation professionals have been grappling with significant layoffs, while streaming services like Max are increasingly reluctant to approve new animated projects. Additionally, many promising animations have faced cancellations midway through development. A striking example is Alex Hirsch, the creator of Gravity Falls, who has been bound by a non-disclosure agreement since 2018, likely developing new material for Netflix, amidst rumors of various canceled projects, including a film adaptation of Gorillaz.
Terra’s new project represents a rare development in an industry that has become stagnant for many artists. The speed at which she is moving forward with Knights of Guinevere—less than two years after The Owl House‘s conclusion—illustrates the unique opportunities afforded by independent production. GLITCH likely provides her team with creative freedoms not available under the Disney umbrella.
This trend mirrors shifts in the gaming industry where the overwhelming cost and protracted timelines of AAA titles have allowed smaller indie games to gain remarkable popularity. These shorter, innovative games appeal to players and often deliver richer experiences.
From the looks of it, Knights of Guinevere promises to deliver a visually stunning experience. Described by GLITCH as a “sci-fi psychological thriller,” the series appears geared toward a more adult audience. The teaser hints that it will be “coming sometime this year (hopefully),” and fans are eager for what’s next. Let’s give Terrace and her team the space to bring their vision to life.
