“He knows, he knows” — Fans Analyze BTS RM’s Instagram Story with ‘Groin’ Lyrics Amid K-Pop Controversies

On October 14, 2024, BTS member Kim Namjoon, widely recognized as RM, posted lyrics from his song “Groin”on his Instagram story. This track is featured on his new solo album, titled “Right Place, Wrong Person,”which was released on May 24, 2024. According to translations provided by Google, the Korean lyrics convey the following in English:

“There are so many unfortunate individuals in the world. So what? Just forge ahead on your own path. There are countless people that may bewilder you in this world.”

For those who may not be aware, “Groin”is a bold and defiant song created by Namjoon, emphasizing that he embodies only his own persona alongside his six BTS bandmates. The lyrics make it clear that neither he nor BTS serves as the voice for any political standpoint, organization, or propaganda, but rather focus solely on their passion for music.

However, some supporters of the K-pop group RIIZE speculated that RM’s recent Instagram story might connect to Seunghan’s dismissal from the group. Swiftly, BTS fans came to Namjoon’s defense, arguing that his lyrics explicitly declare he represents no other K-pop acts. The BTS ARMY criticized other fandoms for linking Namjoon to the ongoing controversy surrounding RIIZE.

Supporters pointed out that if Namjoon were to express his thoughts, they would rather be for his bandmates, who have faced public scrutiny, such as Jimin, who reportedly lost 100 million KRW (approximately $73,657.81) in a scam by comedian Lee Jin-ho, and Suga, who was involved in a DUI incident in August 2024 after an accident on his scooter.

An ARMY member (@ZER06ON3) suggested that Namjoon’s post was related to Jimin, stating,

“He is aware, he is aware.”

Many members of the BTS ARMY took to X, criticizing other K-pop fans for misconstruing Namjoon’s Instagram message as a reference to Seunghan from RIIZE, who was ousted from the group on October 14 by SM Entertainment. Fans questioned the reasoning behind assuming a BTS idol would publicly support an emerging idol from a competitive agency.

“”omg he did this for seungha”DOES JOON KNOW THAT SEUNGHA EXISTS? Let’s be serious here. What makes more sense — that it relates to the situation with the comedian and Jimin or that it’s simply his song????”
a fan wrote.

“K-pop stans believing the universe revolves around them….no, it actually revolves around Jimin, excuse me!!!!”
another fan commented.

“The validation for Namjoon is hilarious. The same individual y’all criticize perpetually on this platform. PLEASE. Did he inform you why he posted this?”
a further fan remarked.

Others pointed out that these same fandoms frequently criticize Namjoon, yet now seek “validation”through his Instagram story to bolster their support for Seunghan. Some ARMY members asserted that Namjoon’s lyrics are directed toward his own group members, Jimin and Suga.

“K-pop fans lack a legitimate reason to criticize Joon. The hateful tweets directed at him with thousands of likes are just attacks on his appearance or taking his words out of context. Yet in times of trouble, you still seek his validation. Please allow my man some peace,”
one fan expressed.

“Namjoon is aware of what transpired with Jimin,”
another user added.

“So when we were trending, BTS is 7 K-poppers said it’s not about Yoongi, but a BTS member’s Instagram story specifically about that guy??? Not happening,”
one more fan remarked.

On the same day, reports from Star News revealed that Lee Jin-ho, a South Korean comedian known for his participation in the famous show “Knowing Bros,”had solicited a sum of 100 million KRW (approximately $73,657.81) from BTS’ Jimin. He borrowed this amount in 2022 under a promissory note.

For clarification, an IOU refers to an informal acknowledgment of a debt. BIGHIT MUSIC, BTS’ label, confirmed on October 14 that Jimin has not received repayment from Lee Jin-ho, stating:

“It is accurate that financial harm occurred as reported, and the arrangement was merely a loan via an IOU.”(translated via Google).

In related news, Billboard shared that Seunghan was recently expelled from SM Entertainment’s rookie band, RIIZE. After being on a 10-month hiatus due to leaked photos showing him smoking and holding hands with a purported girlfriend, RIIZE initially announced his return on October 12; however, this decision was rescinded by the company on October 14.

Additionally, it was reported that some RIIZE fans allegedly placed death wreaths outside SM Entertainment, expressing their desire for Seunghan’s removal. Various fandoms, including BTS ARMY, Seventeen’s CARAT, and Stray Kids’ STAY, voiced their opposition to SM Entertainment’s decision and extended support for Seunghan.

Meanwhile, back in August 2024, BTS’ Suga faced legal trouble for DUI. He was caught riding a foldable electric scooter in front of his residence after falling off on August 6, with a recorded blood alcohol content exceeding 0.08%. Shortly afterward, JTBC aired misleading footage featuring another individual riding a scooter, which led to public backlash against Suga.

On August 15, Dong-A Ilbo News presented original CCTV footage affirming Suga was on a non-motorized kickboard, which could only reach speeds of 30 km/h, comparable to that of a bicycle. Following their incorrect reporting, JTBC issued an apology on August 16, although the damage to Suga’s reputation had already been done.

Subsequently, the Korean Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) launched an inquiry into JTBC for broadcasting unverified reports, ultimately deciding on October 7 not to impose a fine, opting for a mere warning instead.

In other developments, both Kim Namjoon and Jimin began their military service in December 2023 and are expected to return to resume group activities in June 2025.
