Chris Columbus Discusses the Upcoming Harry Potter TV Show
Renowned director Chris Columbus has recently shared his insights about the forthcoming Harry Potter television adaptation. This HBO Max project is based on J.K. Rowling’s iconic book series and was officially announced in 2023. The show is set to feature an eight-episode season for each of the seven novels, with a premiere date targeted for late 2026. This timeline coincides with the 25th anniversary of the franchise’s film debut, which began with Columbus’ adaptation of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”in 2001.
Columbus’ Enthusiasm for the TV Show
In a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Columbus expressed profound excitement about the series’ potential. He conveyed that adapting the franchise into a television format allows for a more comprehensive exploration of the source material. Unlike films, which necessitate brevity, the episodic format offers creators the flexibility to delve deeper into the intricacies of the story.
“The fact that they have the leisure of [multiple] episodes for each book, I think that’s fantastic. You can get all the stuff in the series that we didn’t have an opportunity to do…all these great scenes that we just couldn’t put in the films. I look forward to seeing what they’re trying to do with it. I think it’s great.”

Differences Between the Show and the Original Movies

While specific details about the Harry Potter TV show remain largely undisclosed, a primary focus has been on ensuring a more faithful and detailed adaptation of the original books. Although the film series enjoyed critical acclaim and box office success—with an astonishing total of $7.7 billion grossed worldwide—the constrained runtime of approximately two-and-a-half hours significantly limited narrative depth. As a result, various subplots and character arcs were inevitably omitted.
The forthcoming series aims to address these limitations, appealing not only to younger audiences who are new to the franchise but also to long-time fans of the films. The promise of integrating rich, previously untold stories positions the Harry Potter TV show as a compelling follow-up to its cinematic predecessors, which continue to resonate positively regarding casting, visual effects, and overall storytelling quality.
Columbus Weighs in on Potential Casting Choices
Examining Cillian Murphy’s Candidacy for Voldemort

As the anticipation around casting decisions grows, Columbus was asked about the potential of Cillian Murphy portraying Voldemort—a role famously embodied by Ralph Fiennes in the films. Columbus expressed his admiration for Murphy, stating his enthusiasm for the prospect:
“Well, Cillian is one of my favorite actors, so that would be amazing.”
While there have been no official casting announcements yet, circulating speculation suggests actors like Mark Rylance might step into Dumbledore’s shoes, and Paapa Essiedu could take on Severus Snape. Historically, these roles were portrayed by late actors Richard Harris, Michael Gambon, and Alan Rickman.
Although fan-casting has become a popular pastime, especially with actors like Murphy and Adam Driver at the forefront of online discussions, the reality remains that both actors might be hesitant to commit to a long-term television series given their thriving film careers. Nonetheless, should the casting of Murphy become concrete, it would certainly have Columbus’ approval.
