Harrison Ford is set to make his mark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the upcoming film, Captain America: Brave New World, scheduled for release next year. In an interview with GQ magazine on October 14, 2024, the legendary star known for his role in Indiana Jones shared insights into his decision to dive into the superhero genre.
Ford remarked that it would be “silly”to ignore the opportunity to contribute to a Marvel project, particularly since audiences have consistently supported such films in theaters for many years. He elaborated:
“I see the attraction of films beyond the ones we created in the ’80s and ’90s. I don’t have any overarching statements to make about it. It’s just the state of our industry. Times change, and we shouldn’t waste time lamenting that change instead of embracing it.”
The acclaimed actor elaborated on how the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) influenced his decision, stating:
“I’m stepping into a new area of the industry that, at least for me, is delivering quality experiences for audiences. I find joy in that.”
For those unaware, the 82-year-old Ford will portray Thaddeus Ross, also known as Thunderbolt or Red Hulk, in the forthcoming Captain America film. The MCU introduced Ford’s character to the audience through a celebratory video shared on YouTube during its 85th anniversary in August 2024.
Harrison Ford dismisses claims that superhero films signify the end of movie stars
Some notable figures in Hollywood have voiced their skepticism about superhero films. Quentin Tarantino, for example, has expressed that Marvel’s rise has contributed to the decline of traditional movie stars.
When GQ inquired about his thoughts on whether the industry is witnessing the demise of A-list actors, Ford responded:
“Oh, I think that’s nonsense. The real question isn’t about the existence of movie stars. There are exceptional actors emerging every day. If films require stars, they will inevitably emerge.”
Ford went on to clarify that he identifies as “an actor”rather than a “movie star,”a concept he admitted he has never fully grasped. He explained:
“I’ve never f*cking understood the idea of being labeled a movie star. I’m an actor. I narrate stories. I collaborate with a team to share those stories. I’m essentially an assistant storyteller. That’s my role.”
The Raiders of the Lost Ark star remains engaged in his craft, with his latest endeavor being the comedy-drama series Shrinking, which is set to premiere its second season on Wednesday, October 16, exclusively on Apple TV+. In the series, Ford portrays Paul, a therapist grappling with Parkinson’s disease.
In the same interview, Ford shared his thoughts on why he has no intention of retiring soon. Acknowledging that he could be “sitting on [his] a**”given his career stage, he insisted:
“But I truly love working.”
He expressed his passion for telling impactful stories and emphasized that he selects his projects based on the “quality of writing.”
Captain America: Brave New World is set to premiere on February 14, 2025, starring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, who has officially assumed the role of the iconic superhero.
