Harley Quinn Season 5 Review: A Fresh Take on DC’s Most Engaging Series Justifying Its Ongoing Relevance

Harley Quinn stands out as one of DC’s most captivating offerings to date. Drawing rich inspiration from both Margot Robbie’s interpretation and the timeless DC Comics narratives, this TV-MA animated series boldly explores a myriad of themes within the DC Universe. For fans eager for another dose of entertaining and bloody adult animation following the first season of Creature Commandos, Harley Quinn’s fifth season promises to be captivating. This installment makes a strong case for James Gunn to retain the series long-term as an innovative Elseworlds project.

While I’ve appreciated all past seasons of this animated journey, I found season four slightly lacking compared to its predecessors. Although it featured exhilarating episodes and notable moments—including the much-anticipated introduction of Nightwing—it didn’t quite match the high standards set by the initial three seasons. In my review of Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, I elaborated on how this spinoff refreshing the universe established by Harley Quinn. Now, as we dive into season five, the potential for expansion is immense.

We Are Definitely Not In Gotham Anymore

Harley Quinn Season 5 Moves The Action To Metropolis

This season, that much-needed change of scenery unfolds as Harley and Ivy transition from Gotham City to Metropolis. The previous setting felt exhausted, having explored every facet of Harley’s evolution—from a Joker-controlled villain to a reluctant hero who integrated into the Bat-Family. Shifting the environment to Superman’s vibrant city revitalizes the show, injecting a fresh dynamic into the storytelling.

Initially, the move to Metropolis hadn’t crossed my mind, but the subsequent storyline captivated me. This location not only opens doors to an array of Superman’s rogue gallery but also reintroduces beloved supporting cast members from Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy’s past in Gotham. The show’s portrayal of Superman includes both comical and heartfelt exchanges with Harley, showcasing the contrast between their characters.

Interestingly, I had anticipated seeing Brainiac in James Gunn’s Superman film slated for July (which now appears unlikely). However, his inclusion in Harley Quinn season five was a delightful surprise. Brainiac emerges as a formidable presence, demonstrating depth that I hadn’t expected; by the season’s finale, he became one of my standout favorites, alongside the ever-engaging Bruce Wayne.

Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy’s Relationship Remains At The Forefront

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy have quickly risen to become one of my favorite couples within the DC multiverse, spanning across comics, games, and animated series. While Ivy’s previous relationship with Kite Man had its charm, the growth in Harley and Ivy’s partnership throughout the series has been delightful to witness. Season five opens with the duo striving for a fresh start, mirroring the show’s reinvention.

A significant new character this season is Lena Luthor, voiced by the talented Aisha Tyler from Archer. Her involvement brings a crucial dynamic to Ivy and Harley’s storyline, as they navigate their aspirations in Superman’s city. Following earlier seasons that spotlighted Lex Luthor and his classic schemes against Superman and the Justice League, Lena’s entrance adds a refreshing twist to the narrative.

Longtime fans will be pleased to see familiar faces such as Clayface, Bane, King Shark, and Frank, all making impactful returns throughout the season. Notably, Red X debuts as well, leading to a thrilling mystery that enriches the plot. With a blend of new and old characters combined with the move to Metropolis, season five successfully revitalizes the series, and I am hopeful for many more seasons in the future.

Harley Quinn Season 5 premieres on Thursday, January 16, on Max, with episodes released weekly.
