Established by the visionary Suda51, Grasshopper Manufacture has long been celebrated for its trailblazing approach to video game design. Renowned titles such as No More Heroes and Shadow of the Damned are just a glimpse into their innovative repertoire. Earlier this year, they unveiled their newest project, Romeo is a Dead Man, which immediately sparked excitement among fans, promising a captivating visual style and the hallmark action mechanics for which the studio is famous.
Hands-On Experience at Gamescom 2025
At Gamescom 2025, I had the opportunity to dive into a 30-minute demo of Romeo is a Dead Man. This brief yet impactful experience showcased the potential for this game to stand as one of Suda51’s signature works. The distinct artistic identity evident in the game is unmistakably Grasshopper, featuring dynamic comic book cutscenes that narrate the transformation of FBI agent Romeo into a space-time agent. His mission? To hunt down criminals and locate his missing love, Juliet.
With an eclectic 8-bit visual flair for interface elements and an all-out brawl combat system, players have access to an arsenal of melee weapons and firearms. The skills available range from ramping up damage against foes to applying buffs and debuffs that play off the game’s eccentric atmosphere. While the combat mechanics leaned towards the simpler side of the hack-and-slash genre—with numerous expendable enemies and tougher opponents requiring strategic dodging and defense—the exhilarating presentation ensured that players remained engaged throughout the combat experience.



Innovative Level Design and Gameplay Mechanics
The demo also hinted at the unique level design that plays a crucial role in the game. Players will often need to access Subspace, an alternate dimension characterized by vibrant visuals, to solve straightforward puzzles. This design choice marks a departure from the sprawling open-world layouts seen in previous installments like No More Heroes, enhancing the experience with a more focused linear progression. The demo’s primary setting—a simplistic open field with swampy aesthetics—felt less compelling compared to the intriguing realm of Subspace.
Although Romeo is a Dead Man will emphasize melee combat, Suda51 revealed that ranged combat will also be significant. The demo concluded with an exhilarating boss fight featuring a grotesque creature masquerading as Juliet, showcasing how shooting weak points can deliver considerable damage in the heat of battle.
