Hands-On Preview of FLASK at Gamescom – Intense Auto Battling Experience

Exploring New Adventures at Gamescom 2025

This year, Gamescom provided a fantastic opportunity to experience a wide array of games. While titles such as Ninja Gaiden 4 and Phantom Blade Zero were already on the radar, there were also unexpected gems. Among these was FLASK, a roguelike auto battler developed by Chop Chop Games, set to be released by Ghost Ship Games. Its visually stunning hand-drawn art style draws inspiration from classic comic books, making it as enjoyable to behold as it is to play.

Creative Gameplay and Unique Premise

FLASK offers a captivating concept that perfectly embodies creativity with a touch of whimsy. Players assume the role of an alchemist entrenched in debt, embarking on a perilous journey through a dark medieval landscape fraught with dangers. The mission? To gather various flasks that empower an army of homunculus warriors to combat goblin hordes and accrue enough gold to settle their debts.

The game unfolds across multiple hand-drawn maps populated with randomly generated nodes. These interactive nodes serve various purposes: players can shop for flasks, receive free ones, interact with NPCs to advance the main storyline, and engage in battles with enemies using their current set of homunculi warriors. Initially, players start with just one homunculus, but as the adventure progresses, they can recruit additional allies up to a total of three, allowing for dynamic party configurations tailored to tackle unexpected challenges.

Dynamic Combat Mechanics

The essence of roguelike games lies in adapting to ever-changing situations, and FLASK excels in this regard. With its focus on hardcore gameplay, players must navigate challenging auto battles where their control is minimally relied upon. The strategy revolves around managing which flasks homunculi equip, thereby enhancing their stats and activating special effects during combat.

Each type of homunculus can utilize unique flasks, which activate sequentially during fights, creating complex interactions that can take time to master. The synergy potential among various flasks appears substantial and impressive. My brief interaction with the game left me eager to experiment with available setups, especially considering the thrilling asynchronous PvP feature that enables players to test their configurations against others, adding significant competitive depth to the experience.

Final Thoughts and Anticipation

As a fan of roguelikes like FLASK that emphasize the importance of power synergies, I found myself wishing for more time to delve deeper into its offerings. The conclusion of my session at Gamescom 2025 was somewhat bittersweet, leaving me yearning for another opportunity to explore the game’s rich intricacies. With its promising early build, FLASK is one to watch, with an anticipated launch on Steam slated for next year.
