The tragic murder of Annie Lois Sim, committed by her grandson Christian Sims, is a key feature in Netflix’s gripping true crime series, I Am a Killer. Additionally, Christian’s girlfriend, Ashley Morrison, faced charges connected to this shocking 2014 event.

Christian fired multiple shots at his grandmother and accepted a guilty plea before his trial commenced. Subsequently, he received a 35-year sentence for second-degree murder.

While Ashley Morrison did not physically carry out the shooting, evidence pointed toward her knowledge of the impending crime, highlighted by text messages exchanged between her and Christian. These communications led the jury to conclude her involvement, resulting in Ashley opting for a plea deal that sentenced her to 30 years behind bars.

The second episode of I Am a Killer’s fifth season included interviews with both Christian and Ashley, sparking viewer outrage regarding Ashley’s arrest and sentencing. One viewer expressed their frustrations in a Reddit discussion about the perceived injustices in Texas law:

What evidence was presented against Ashley Morrison?

The second episode of I Am a Killer on Netflix highlighted that just two days post the murder of Annie Lois Sims in December 2014, both Ashley Morrison and Christian were arrested. As indicated earlier, Christian Sims pled guilty to the crime and was sentenced to 35 years in prison in 2016.

In the wake of Ashley’s arrest, she maintained her innocence. During an initial interview with Texas Ranger Stacy McNeal, she claimed ignorance about the circumstances surrounding Annie Lois Morrison’s death and stated that Christian was unarmed.

However, in a subsequent interview, Ashley admitted to aiding Christian in loading the firearm used in the murder of his grandmother. This shift in her story, along with various inconsistencies between her statements, did not bode well for her image in front of the jury.

Text messages exchanged between the couple further substantiated claims of Christian’s murderous intentions. Ultimately, in 2017, Ashley was sentenced to 30 years in prison for her role as an accomplice.

After her conviction, Ashley sought an appeal, leading to a new trial date being set. Yet, in 2019, she chose to forgo the new trial, pled guilty, and was sentenced again for second-degree murder, resulting in another 30-year prison term.

Currently, Ashley Morrison is serving her sentence at the William P. Hobby Unit in Texas.
