Gyeongseong Creature Season 2: Exploring the Time Leap and Connections Between Past and Present
Gyeongseong Creature Season 2 debuted on Netflix on September 28, 2024, and features an impressive cast including Park Seo-joon, Han So-hee, Claudia Kim, and Lee Moo-saeng. Set in 2024, the storyline unfolds 79 years after the fateful events of 1945, when Tae-sang (Park Seo-joon) and Chae-ok (Han So-hee) destroyed Onseong Hospital and dismantled Lady Maeda’s (Claudia Kim) organization.
Both characters become immortal due to the Najin parasite residing within them. After 79 years, Tae-sang and Chae-ok cross paths, oblivious to each other’s identities, only to discover that Lady Maeda and her experiments have not only survived but flourished over the decades. The season artfully weaves parallel scenes between 1945 and 2024 as the narrative progresses.
The second season mirrors the initial encounter of Chae-ok and Tae-sang (now Ho-jae). In Season 1, Chae-ok shadowed Tae-sang, culminating in a dramatic meeting in a dimly lit alley. In contrast, during Season 2, Ho-jae tracks Chae-ok, leading to an equally intense confrontation. Both encounters end in a fistfight, where Ho-jae asserts:
“This time, I won’t go easy on you.”
Gyeongseong Creature Season 2 Explores the Love Story of Chae-ok and Tae-sang Over 79 Years
For those not in the know, Tae-sang becomes infected by the Najin parasite two years after the destruction of Onseong Hospital in 1945 (Season 1). Lady Maeda lured him into her trap in 1947, where he was infected. Over the next 79 years, he battled against her and her new organization, Jeonseong Bio—which was established over Onseong Hospital—but was ultimately captured in 2023 and underwent an operation to remove the Najin parasite from his body.
This procedure led to the loss of his memories, and he assumed a new identity as Jang Ho-jae. His best friend, Kwon Yong-pil, is actually the grandson of Kwon Jun-taek (Wi Ha-joon), a wealthy noble and Jang Tae-sang’s closest ally, who was also a freedom fighter in Season 1.
In a compelling moment in episode 6 of Gyeongseong Creature Season 2, Jang Ho-jae, previously known as Jang Tae-sang, declares he will not sit idly by while others handle his responsibilities, echoing his own sentiments from Season 1 when he resolved to infiltrate Onseong Hospital to rescue Chae-ok and others.
The show also revisits the experiment chamber from Season 1, which has been modernized into Jeonseong Bio’s facility. The chamber, now updated with glass railings and sleek black marble, is reminiscent of a previous time when General Kato observed Sheisin, Chae-ok’s mother, as she transformed into a Najin monster and committed acts of violence.
By 2024, the older monster has been replaced in Gyeongseong Creature Season 2 by one that survived the Tokyo blast in 1945, as seen at the conclusion of Season 1, along with two other newly mutated creatures. The prison cells from 1945 have been reinforced with stronger steel, and now, with additions like comfortable beds and smaller, lighter nitrogen gas barrels resembling hand grenades.
Unlike Season 1, which primarily depicted the struggle against Lady Maeda’s human experiments, Gyeongseong Creature Season 2 delves deeper into the romantic bond between Chae-ok (Han So-hee) and Tae-sang (Park Seo-joon). Director Chung Dong-yoon mentioned in a September 28 interview with Marie Claire that he wanted to shine a light on their evolving love story while also reflecting on “the remnants of the past.”
“For season 2, I wanted to focus on the love story between Ho-jae and Chae-ok, [and] show how they are still loving each other and running towards each other. I also wanted to show the remnants of the past that we still see in the modern day,”he said.
Gyeongseong Creature Season 2 consists of 7 episodes and is available for streaming on Netflix globally.
