In December, a fresh entry in the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise was unveiled, making its way to cinemas in the United States. This marks the first collaboration between the legendary animation studio Sunrise and the acclaimed Khara, widely recognized for its work on the Rebuild of Evangelion series.
The upcoming series is named Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX (pronounced “G-Quacks”). Scriptwriting is in the capable hands of Hideaki Anno and Yoji Enokido, with Kazuya Tsurumaki serving as the director. Notably, Anno is renowned for creating Evangelion, while both Enokido and Tsurumaki have contributed to various episodes within the Gundam universe.
GKIDS has announced the acquisition of rights to the prologue film entitled Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, which is set to premiere in North American theaters on February 28, 2025.

In anticipation of the series, the prologue film is expected to provide essential context, though the official debut date for the series itself remains pending. As the film is currently showcasing in Japan, further announcements regarding the series are anticipated.
Set in a futuristic space colony, GQuuuuuuX follows the story of a new protagonist, Amate, as she navigates conflicts with space police and military forces. The narrative promises engaging battles and complex character dynamics.
Key members of the production team include Take from Pokémon Sun & Moon as the character designer and Ikuto Yamashita (known for Shin Kamen Rider and Evangelion) as the mechanical designer.
Role of Anno in the Series

As Anno crafts the scripts, it appears that Tsurumaki is controlling the project’s overall direction closely. Ikuto Yamashita noted that while Anno provides insight, Tsurumaki is the primary overseer of the production:
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is supervised by Kazuya Tsurumaki. He decides everything as the director. Anno might be giving him some support on the sideline, but that’s all. Anno, in his capacity as president of Khara, will be informed about the project’s progress. However, [Tsurumaki] hides everything until the very last minute to avoid being overturned or having to redo everything.
GQuuuuuuX is shaping up to be a series accessible to new audiences, appealing even to those unfamiliar with previous Gundam lore.
While fans eagerly await the prologue film’s release in North America, the debut date for the associated TV series continues to be closely monitored.
