Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ Highlights Hollywood’s Desire for Oscar Isaac

Oscar Isaac is experiencing a much-anticipated resurgence in his career, largely spurred by his collaboration with Guillermo del Toro in the upcoming Netflix film, Frankenstein. This project has captivated fans since its initial announcement, reinforcing Isaac’s reputation as a leading actor when paired with del Toro’s innovative storytelling.

My excitement for Frankenstein in 2025 has been palpable, as the combination of Guillermo del Toro and Oscar Isaac feels like a cinematic event akin to a cultural Super Bowl. Del Toro, who first expressed interest in adapting Mary Shelley’s iconic novel over a decade ago, is finally seeing his vision come to life with the backing of Netflix. The film promises to deliver a unique interpretation of the classic tale, perhaps noting elements of eerie allure in its depiction of the creature.

Oscar Isaac: A Much-Needed Comeback

In this reimagining, Oscar Isaac steps into the role of Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a character that aligns perfectly with his unique talent and previously underutilized skills. Joining Isaac are notable actors Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Ralph Ineson, while Jacob Elordi will portray the iconic Monster. Preliminary discussions indicated that Andrew Garfield could have taken on the role of Frankenstein’s Monster, a casting that many fans wish had materialized. Nonetheless, Elordi’s towering stature may lend itself well to the embodiment of this formidable character.

Recently, Netflix showcased a preview of Frankenstein during their 2025 showcase event, where early footage revealed Dr. Frankenstein’s infamous experiment coming to life. I can only imagine that social media will soon overflow with TikTok edits reminiscent of classic horror, potentially featuring Elordi’s brooding portrayal paired with haunting melodies, perhaps even reminiscent of Lana Del Rey’s “Ride.”

With a striking still from the film featuring Isaac released earlier this week, it raised questions about his absence from the screen. The first thought that crossed my mind was, “Where has he been hiding?”This film marks a thrilling return to the forefront for Isaac, and I eagerly anticipate engaging with content centered around his portrayal of Dr. Frankenstein.

The Absence and Anticipation of Oscar Isaac

In the past few years, Oscar Isaac’s presence in film and television has notably diminished, with his last significant role being the voice of Miguel O’Hara in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023).Although he made a brief return as Moon Knight in a Marvel episode, fans have longed for more consistent appearances since his standout performances in projects like Scenes from a Marriage and Dune: Part One.

The absence of Oscar Isaac within Hollywood feels stark, considering his impressive filmography. Beyond iconic roles in major franchises, he has showcased his dramatic range in films such as At Eternity’s Gate and Inside Llewyn Davis, the latter being a highlight in the Coen Brothers’ oeuvre. His dynamic versatility as an actor is undeniable, and it is my sincere hope that Frankenstein rejuvenates interest in casting him across various projects.

Despite achieving considerable success over nearly three decades, it seems that Oscar Isaac has not received the recognition he deserves since his time in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. While he has indicated a desire for a break from acting following the mixed reviews of The Rise of Skywalker, it looks like he is poised to re-enter the spotlight with renewed energy. As a fervent admirer of his work, I celebrate Isaac’s imminent return and look forward to witnessing his continued impact on cinema.
