In a strategic alliance, Google has rebranded its Nearby Share feature to Quick Share in collaboration with Samsung, dramatically enhancing the ease and speed of wireless file sharing across various platforms. Now, users can seamlessly transfer files among Android devices, Windows PCs, and Chrome OS devices. Let’s dive into the world of Quick Share and learn how to efficiently move your files across devices!
Understanding Quick Share on Android
Launched in 2024, Quick Share combines the capabilities of Nearby Share and Quick Share into a unified and cross-platform solution designed specifically for Android users. This innovative feature allows you to share files, apps, and even lengthy videos wirelessly with nearby devices, creating a sharing experience akin to Apple’s AirDrop.
Quick Share is designed exclusively for Android devices, which means it is not compatible with iPhones or iPads at this moment. This limitation is worth noting for users who might be looking for cross-compatibility with Apple devices.
Getting Started with Quick Share on Android
Before initiating Quick Share, ensure that Bluetooth and location services are activated on both your Android phone and the receiving device. This is crucial for successful file transfers.
Follow these steps to set up Quick Share:
- Open the Settings app on your Android device and tap on Connected Devices.
- Select Connected preferences.
- Choose Quick Share to access its settings.

Here, you can customize various settings such as:
- Renaming your device
- Selecting the Google account you wish to use for transfers
- Managing your privacy settings under Who can share with you.

For the sharing options, you can select:
- Your devices: Share only with devices using the same Google account.
- Contacts: Share only with Google contacts associated with your signed-in account.
- Everyone: Allows sharing with any nearby device. If selecting this, consider enabling the Only for 10 minutes option for safety.
Newly added capabilities allow you to continue a file transfer even if the devices lose Wi-Fi connectivity. Simply keep the Use mobile data option turned on.
Transferring Files Between Android Devices
You’re all set to transfer your first files via Quick Share! To begin, locate a file you wish to send; for our example, we’ll share a photo.
Here’s how to do it:
- Open the image in your gallery, then tap the Share button.
- Select Quick Share from the share options menu.
- Choose the nearby device to which you’d like to send the file. If it doesn’t appear, ensure the recipient’s screen is on and prompt them to adjust their Quick Share settings to Everyone.

After selecting the device, a Quick Share prompt will inform the recipient that a file is being shared. They simply need to press Accept to initiate the download.

Once the transfer completes, a notification will appear on the receiving device, allowing the recipient to Open the file or check View downloads.
You also have the option to generate a QR code for the file share, which the other party can scan for a quick transfer.

Transferring Files Between Android and Windows
Quick Share makes it a breeze to transfer files between your Android and Windows devices. Start by downloading Quick Share for Windows (available for Windows 10 and 11).
Note that Quick Share is not currently compatible with Mac or Linux, but users can explore RQuickShare as a potential alternative.
After installing Quick Share on your PC, launch the application and log in with the same Google account linked to your Android device.
Configuration on Windows
On the “Set Up Quick Share”screen, select your desired Receiving options, much like you did on your Android device.

When both devices are ready, initiate a transfer from your Android:
- Open the file you want to share (a GIF in our case), tap Share, and select Quick Share.
- On the subsequent screen, select your PC from the Send to your devices list.

Then, on Quick Share for Windows, the received file will become available to open immediately.
Sending Files from PC to Android
To transfer files from your PC to Android, simply right-click the desired file and choose Send with Quick Share from the context menu.

Select your Android device in Quick Share on the PC to start the transfer. Wait for the process to finalize, and a notification will display the successful transfer on your Android screen.

For convenience, files can also be dragged and dropped into Quick Share on your PC.
After completing all transfers, don’t forget to adjust the PC’s status to Device is hidden.

Transferring Files Between Android and Chrome OS
Quick Share is also functional on Chrome OS laptops. To facilitate file transfers:
- Click on the time section in the bottom-right corner of your Chromebook to access quick settings.
- Enable the Quick Share toggle.
Now, when you share a file from your Android device, your Chromebook should appear as an option. Conversely, when sharing from a Chromebook to Android, the Quick Share option will appear in the context menu upon right-clicking a file.
If you frequently send files between your Android and Windows devices, consider exploring Microsoft’s PhoneLink solution, which provides access to SMS messages, photos, and phone calls. For cross-platform needs between Android and iPhone, investigate dedicated app solutions.
