Age of Darkness: Mastering Base Defense and Gate Rotation
In Age of Darkness, players are immersed in a world where exploration, territorial expansion, and robust base defense are essential for survival. As your hero and their group traverse the perilous, Nightmare-infested landscapes, safeguarding your town becomes a priority. Establishing a solid perimeter with walls and gates is vital; however, given the unpredictable nature of enemy attacks, a comprehensive defense strategy is imperative.
The intricacies of base building are critical in Age of Darkness, making it essential for players to grasp the foundational elements of this mechanic. A key aspect of base building that every player should master is the operation of gates—specifically, the method to rotate them for optimal placement.
How to Rotate Gates in Age of Darkness

The default key for rotating gates is Tab, although players have the flexibility to customize their keybindings. When positioning a gate from the build menu, hover over the selected land and press Tab to adjust its orientation. However, keep in mind that gates that are already constructed cannot be rotated.
Players have the option to place gates on any buildable area, including atop existing walls. Yet, if multiple layers of walls are stacked, a minimum spacing of one cell between them is necessary to enable placement; otherwise, the game will restrict the action.
Tips for Effective Building
Gates are relatively sturdy, allowing them to withstand Nightmare assaults for a considerable duration. An effective strategy early in the game—when resources may be limited—is to position two gates closely together. This tactic works well for using melee hero units strategically amidst enemy hordes.
However, since gates are less durable than conventional walls, transitioning to walls during Death Nights could be advantageous. This approach is crucial if you primarily depend on towers, traps, and siege mechanisms for your defense, as it provides safer retreat pathways for melee units.
Building Rotation Limitations

As of the latest update, the rotation of buildings in Age of Darkness remains unavailable. All structures are anchored in a fixed orientation, meaning their facing direction cannot be altered post-placement. Nevertheless, players can control the exit direction for unit production buildings such as Training Halls and Siege Factories. To do this, select the respective building and right-click on a desired location to establish a Rally Point, allowing effective unit management during gameplay.
