Among Japan’s most endearing tourist destinations are its numerous cat islands, which have captivated visitors with their charm. Among these, Okishima—which lies on Lake Biwa, the largest freshwater lake in Japan—is particularly noteworthy, as it boasts a rich history dating back to approximately the 12th century. This cat island is not only home to a quaint population of friendly felines but also serves as a glimpse into Japan’s storied past.
In the latest installment of the Assassin’s Creed series, titled Assassin’s Creed Shadows, players can experience the allure of Okishima firsthand. As characters Naoe and Yasuke navigate the province of Omi, they have the unique opportunity to discover hidden treasures, synchronize with key viewpoints, and enjoy the companionship of the island’s affectionate cats, all while expanding their hideout collection.
Exploring the Cat Island in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
To embark on a journey to this feline haven in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, players must venture to the Omi province, situated northeast of the Settsu starting area and east of Kyoto. The most efficient route involves swimming across Lake Biwa to reach Okishima Island directly.
Starting your adventure in Settsu, you can either follow the main road heading towards Omi or travel east from Kyoto, depending on the viewpoints and fast travel points you’ve already unlocked.

Upon your arrival in Omi, be sure to explore the expansive temple grounds before making your way to Azuchi. Once at the port, whether you choose to commandeer a boat or swim out to the island—after all, it’s fresh water—you will soon reach the largest island visible.
Once on the island, you can immediately start interacting with the playful cats. Adventure awaits in either direction; the eastern side of the island features a viewpoint that allows for fast travel and a hidden chest at its base, offering a chance to acquire valuable items.
On the western side, players will encounter an intriguing temple and a unique opportunity to engage with a mysterious woman reputed to be cursed. By offering to replace her lost fruit gift, you may uncover vital information that could assist you on your journey.
Venturing to Okishima is not just about the adorable cats; it enhances the beautifully recreated narrative of southwestern Japan featured in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
