Discovering Sunset Fireflies in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

In the expansive world of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, numerous side quests await, alongside a myriad of creatures to encounter beyond the primary narrative. If you’re on a quest to unlock the various Great Fairy Fountains scattered throughout Hyrule, you will need to locate and recruit four distinct musicians, each with their own unique request.

The Flute Player, who can be found perched atop a tree, seeks Sunset Fireflies to create a mesmerizing serenade for Kaysa. These elusive creatures are predominantly found throughout Hyrule during nighttime, but can be quite tricky to spot if you’re not sure what to look for. Below, we outline the best locations to find Sunset Fireflies in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Best Locations for Sunset Fireflies

First and foremost, it is essential to know that Sunset Fireflies can only be collected at night in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. They flutter about from dusk until dawn, vanishing entirely during daylight hours.

Next, let’s identify these critters. Sunset Fireflies are small, glowing green orbs that travel in groups, making them visually distinct in their natural habitat.

Common habitats for these fireflies include forests and wetlands. When collecting them for The Flute Player’s Pan side quest, he suggests two particularly fruitful areas: Pagos Woods and Finra Woods.

Both of these locations are positioned north of the Highland Stable and Utsushok Shrine, as indicated on the accompanying map below!

However, don’t limit your search to these forests alone. Typically, if you are within proximity to a forest or wetland at night, there’s a good chance you’ll encounter these fireflies. It’s important to note that they do not appear in extreme climates, such as the scorching Gerudo Canyon or the frigid Hebra Mountains.

I have spotted Sunset Fireflies abundant in Lanaryu Wetlands, Hateno Village, and around Satori Mountain in eastern Gerudo. Once you familiarize yourself with their appearance and how to approach them, you will likely find them frequently.

When you approach a group of Sunset Fireflies, they typically take flight. To increase your chances of capturing them, you must approach stealthily. Employing Stealth armor or a stealth elixir can be beneficial, but you can also simply crouch and walk closer to them.

Usually, each collection of Sunset Fireflies contains a couple of the brighter ones. Once you’ve collected a few from one area, move on to another forest or swamp where they might be found.
