Guide to Changing Armor Appearance in Monster Hunter Wilds

In the world of Monster Hunter Wilds, a wide variety of armor sets are available, each with unique styles and benefits. However, many players find themselves torn between choosing powerful late-game gear and maintaining their character’s appearance. Fortunately, the game includes a feature known as Layered Armor, which allows you to equip gear with superior stats while looking fashionable.

Layered Armor isn’t accessible from the outset; you must progress through the game to unlock it. Essentially, it’s a transmog system that allows you to maintain the bonuses of one armor piece while displaying the look of another. This guide will walk you through how to change your armor’s appearance in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Unlocking Layered Armor

Your journey to changing armor appearances begins by acquiring layered armor. This involves crafting High Rank armor at the Smithy. Most High Rank items can eventually serve as the basis for your layered armor collection.

For instance, if you possess the Guild Knight armor set (available as a pre-order bonus), you can use this as layered armor, all while keeping the advantages of your currently equipped armor. Until you’ve crafted a sufficient number of High Rank pieces, your options for layered armor may be somewhat limited.

Equipping Layered Armor

Now that you’ve unlocked layered armor, let’s dive into how to equip it:

  • Ensure you have the desired armor for stat bonuses equipped.
  • Head to your Tent.
  • Access the Appearance Menu.

Upon opening the Appearance Menu, select ‘Equipment Appearance’. Your Hunter will stand proudly, showcasing their current gear, with all equipped items displayed on the right side of the screen.

To equip a piece of layered armor, simply choose the armor item you wish to change. A list of your available layered armor will appear; select the item you want to use for your appearance. For example, you could choose to visualize the Oni Horns Wig but retain the stats of your Lala Barina headpiece—it’s as straightforward as that!
